Hi guys,
Yes I am a newbie and would appreciate it if you could help me answer this question. I own a J2 ZX6r. When i start the engine with the choke on the engine will idle at 4000 rpm and then slowly warm up.The temperature will come to say around 45 degrees and when i turn off the choke the engine just dies (i.e. the main headlight will become dim and the engine dies) when i try and start the bike again it wont start even with full choke and instead i have to use extra throttle to get it started. If i am to let go of the throttle with the full choke the engine still dies. I am finding that I have to wait to get the engine to at least 70 degrees before it is comfortable at an idling speed of 1000 rpm (without any chugging). I have no issues when the bike is moving and if i am to leave the bike standing for a minute after it has just been ridden it will start straight away with a little throttle and will idle comfortably without throttle. I am a bit worried about this and have no idea as to what the cause maybe. I have no technical knowledge at all so please try and keep it simple for me. I would like to know what the temperature should be before i can set off on the bike? What people think may be the root cause of the issue? and finally what the possible solution could be? Thanks to everyone in advance of their replies. |

You may have a little varnish buildup in the carbs causing it to run a little leaner and have to be warmer to run w/o the choke. Go to the local NAPA and pick up a can of seafoam fuel additive and run a tank of gas with that mixed in it. Instructions are on the can.
The length of time needed for warm up is going to be based on the outside air temp. I let mine warm up enough to make sure the oil is warm and flowing good. If it's a 70 + day I start it up and give it a minute or so to make sure the oil has had time to circulate through the entire engine then I'm off and running. Usually by the time I can start it and put my gear on I'm moving. |

Hi Jag, welcome to the forum.
I had similar problems with my GPz and it turned out to be caused by blocked idle jets. If the seafoam Stargate advises doesn't work, you'll need to pull out the carbs and clean the jets and all apertures. Also, do some basic checks on the primary systems. See here for a post on how to do that.... HTML Code:
