Default '99 ZX7R problems, no spark!

hi all,

having trouble with my 7R, looked at all the other related threads with no luck.

basically i spiked my datatool veto evo alarm, then reset it, and the bike still seemed immoblised, so i ripped the alarm out hoping that would solve the problem.

used the wiring diagram and wired it all back up correctly, and still nothing

the starter turns over, but there is no spark at the plugs

cdi is working fine, so is the ignition resistor, coils are fine too. checked all switches, ie clutch, sidestand, neutral, kill.

i just cant seem to find the problem, ive got a new loom on its way to me anyway, so hopefully that might solve it.

any other ideas?

cheers

You might have a safety interlock issue. It's pretty common with older 7Rs. Usually it is the clutch interlock switch that causes this problem, but it could also be the sidestand interlock. You can usually open up and clean the contacts on the clutch switch and bypass the sidestand switch.

The sidestand interlock is the easiest to test (although your problem is probably the clutch switch). There are two wires coming out of your kickstand and should connect into the main wiring loom about 6 inches away from the kickstand. Disconnect the two wires and jumper them on the loom side. This defeats the safety switch for the kickstand. If this doesn't fix your problem then just reconnect the wires and move on to the clutch switch.

The clutch switch is located on the left side hand control. There are a few different switches in here. If you remove the switch gear on the left side and remove it (remember how to reinstall the choke cable) you will see some electrical contacts connected to a pressure switch. Cleaning these contacts should help.

Speaking of, I need to clean mine. My bike has been a pain to start lately. I guess you could do what I have been doing for the last few months and hold the starter button (or press it every second or so) while you compress and release the clutch lever. If your bike starts to turn over when you do this, it's definitely the clutch switch.
