Default 1987 KLR 650 Electrical issues

So I am driving to work yesterday and lose all power at about 55mph. No power at all for about 5 minutes. Then it miraculously starts back up and I am on my merry way. Get on the Expressway and it does it again. wait about 10 minutes starts back up with a lot of cranking. Turn around get off the Eway stops for good this time no power even after I got out of work. Go out this morning undo the battery hook it back up. Starts ok, ride it for about 10 hard minutes. Does the same thing twice. I am thinking it's the voltage regulator, but I am no mechanic. PLEASE HELP. can I test the voltage regulator? could it be the ignition switch? what else might be overheating? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

If the regulator went bad you would still have the battery providing power until it was drained. Instant total electrical loss would most likely be in the ign switch, fuse panel, or associated wiring from battery > fuse panel main fuse > ign switch > back to fuse panel. The other half of that circuit would be the ground side so don't forget to check that as well. First thing I would look for would be a loose/dirty/corroded connection like the battery to frame/engine ground.

Totally agree with Stargate, check for loose/dirty/corroded grounds first. After that, i'd have a look at the ignition switch, and associated harness.

Just to let you know it was a extremely corroded fuse box. I cleaned it up really good and it is running great once again
