    Default i feel so lost...

i pulled the stator cover and my crankcase drained... i am the first to admit i know little if anything about bikes but i have been doing my own work on cars since i was 14 and i've owned more than most... i assume (usually a mistake) that was supposed to happen but it struck me as wrong because even though i know oil is used in various capacitors for cooling...but in the case of a fly wheel/stator and pick up coil... moving parts are bound to create shavings that will float around and that has the potential to cause probs where electrical components are trying to do a specific job... so is that area of the motor supposed to be full of motor oil and if so how do these components avoid shorting and if they are designed to function in this environment what could possibly cause them to malfunction..?

Not a scientist or engineer here, but hundreds of thousands of Jap bikes are running around working like this, so it works, I guess.

My pickups are dry, on the other side of the motor. Assume that most are that way too.

I guess stators fail for shorts/opens/low or high output like most electronic devices, and assume that the very thick coating around the windings make a big difference as insulation. That is, unless said insulation wears out.

hello mate how ya going mate ive worked on bikes and atvs 4 as long as i can remember and most stators work in oil the only problem is wen the oil dosent get changed regularly the oil becomes conductive with microscopic straces of worn steel and aluminum thats wen they short out

No idea what model your bike is but as stated above stator and pickups are on opposite sides of the engine for all that I've seen and worked on. It is normal for for the ones I've seen to have some oil in the stator area. I'm not sure how your's drained the crankcase since the hole for the crankshaft end is higher than the oil level in the engine. If it did drain the engine then you may have a problem.

ya i thought that was the strangest part...i can understand a certain level cause with a little help from the way the case is cast oil could travel to all the gears in the stator area that relate to starting and may never hit the fly wheel ,stator or pick up... (pickup on outside of wheel sensing three like size smaller chunks of metal and one way larger attached to the outside of said wheel..? no?) unless you bank it like it was meant to be banked of course but even then the shape of the housing could still keep the oil from getting near the electrics... but i assume (did it again) when you say "problem" you mean a worn seal of some sort...ya? oh! and shouldn't i have continuity between the plug end and ground on black and the business end of pick up and the plug end of yellow..? both read "O.L."
