I've wasted a full day on a carb clean before. I did the carb clean and replaced the slide needle/emulsifier with the one the SM had ordered for the job. unit wouldn't run worth a damn, just like I had missed something in the carb clean. after cleaning, recleaning, again and again I finally figured out that the SM had ordered the wrong needle and emulsifier. I was pulling my hair out with it.

had a customer come into the shop with a 4 wheeler that had caught on fire in their garage after being ridden. they wanted suzuki to fix/replace the unit. the customer had bought it used and they have shorter warranty than bikes. the rear fenders were not attached to the bike anywhere, you could lift them right off the bike. the battery was mounted back there with the cables going between the plastic and a support. not a problem if the plastic is mounted as it should be. it shorted out between the battery and the solenoid and caused a fire. the suzuki rep said that it was neglect on the customers part but they wouldn't have done anything any way because of the age of the unit. I think it was 3 years old.
I didn't get to hear the conversation when the customer was told, really wish I could have.

customer pulls up to the shop, gets out of his truck sees me and one of the SM's standing by the door. he starts cursing like crazy. basically he was tired of having to bring his atv (that he said he only uses a couple times a year) in to have the carb cleaned and a new battery. I asked him if he would expect his truck to start if he treated it that way. he said of course he would, I've got a 196-something back at the house that starts every time with no problems. I walked away and let the SM deal with it.

I'm told to talk to a customer about some light problem on his new trailer. he explains what it is doing. I tell him that he either has a bad ground or a bad socket and that he was probably going to need a heavy duty flasher unit.
he started to tell me that I didn't know what I was talking about so I turned and started to walk away. he says where are you going. I told him that he had already told me that I couldn't fix his problem so I was going to go back to work. then he wanted to listen to what I was telling him. checked it out and it was a bad socket and he needed the heavy duty flasher unit.

One of my biggest customers had a battery changing machine for their electric lift trucks.
During the last maintenance, they were told that the brushes were worn on the battery changer's hydraulic pump motor. My contact escalated the issue, and was refused authorization (motor was worth $2500, brushes were not available) to keep a spare on the shelf. I was at another customers site a few weeks later, when the call comes - on my personal cell phone, our 'mike' phones don't work at this particular client - the battery changer is dead. Uh oh. This client has a dedicated rail type battery changer. If the battery changer doesn't run, it's impossible to change batteries in any of their 40 lift trucks. Uh oh. Parts come from the states only, and are a 2 day wait. Uh oh. Battery life on an electric lift truck is 6 operating hours max. UH OH. I told my dispatcher I'd see what I could do, but explained the situation to her in detail. Looks like Canada's largest telephone company just stopped shipping or receiving ANYTHING. For two days. 48 hours in a building that runs every day but Canada Day, Christmas and New Years. Drive from Mississauga to Scarborough (about 45 mins). Go to another client who's got the same machine and begged to steal their spare motor for a couple of days. I had sold them one a few years before. No trouble. Drive to Weston (about 30 mins), pull in to the customers' site and park at the maintenance shop door. Enter the office, and there's my contact with a long face, and his boss with an even longer face. I decided to have a little fun, and reiterate that the motor was 2 days away in the states, if it didn't get held up at the border (happens ALL the time). Much longer faces. Say my goodbyes, out to my van, grab the new motor and tool box, and back inside I go. Long faces are now smiling faces! 2 Weeks later, I received a copy of a letter explaining the details of the occurance that was sent to the CEO of the company I worked for. The largest narrow aisle dealer in North America. I got $50, so did the dispatcher for looking up my cell #.

Do not get me started on Poolaris ATV's.
I have worked on every brand of ATV made, and in my humble opinion poolaris is pure junk compared to any other main stram brand, like Honda, suzi, yami etc. But they are better at least than those cheap junkers you can buy at dept stores for little money. They are not worth even $50 new IMO....pure crap is what they are....I now refuse to even work on them. If your ATV is some weird brand, made in God only knows where, find some other sucker to fix it for you. I have seen and worked on so many sleds, quads, motorbikes, etc. that I have formed rather firm opinions on what I do like, and do NOT like. Maybe in the quad market, more than any other. |
