Exclamation EX500 Reserve Questions...

If you've seen my previous post or not I'm struggling with rust in the tank, and I'm pretty sure most of it is in the reserve, because the resevere input on the petcock keeps getting clogged up with mess. I've tried treating the gas tank with Yamahas gas tank rust removal and nuetralize with no luck.

I 've also ran out of gas on my 500, even tried switching it over tothe reserve and still nothing...

So my question is where is the reserve in the tank and is that a way to flush it out? and does treating the tank with something like Pro15 acutally get into the reserve?

**** reserve I wish there wasn't one!

I would say that there likely isn't much you're going to be able to do without removing the tank. If the tank is rusting that badly, you may wish to think about a replacement anyway. Probably won't be long before it starts leaking, and then you'll have real problems.

To answer your original question. The tank it's self is the reserve and vice versa. All the reserve in the tank is, is a lower pickup point for the same fuel from the same tank. It sounds like your not getting the tank flushed out completely and the rust and gunk that is still in the bottom isn't floating up enough to get in the regular pickup, but when you go to reserve it slides right in due to this pickup being down at the bottom of the tank where the heavier pieces of rust are at. I don't know about your particular bike, but most have some sort of an in the tank filter that should be preventing all but the tiniest pieces from getting to the fuel line. The rust could clog the in tank filter to the point of making the bike run poorly though.

wow thats info is great gpzrider, I assumed there was baffling or something that was actually separated from the main pickup area.

And yes there is a filter on the main pickup on the pitcock, but there is not one of the reserve pickup.

I think this next Time I clean out the tank I'm going to bring it to the car wash and use the pressure washer there to clean it out, then use that Pro15

thanks again!

Had the same problem on my EX. It's more work but I used the Kreem tank liner. Never a problem after that. It was like $27 but totally eliminated the hassle of continually cleaning the **** out.
