Hey folks,
I have an 86 GPZ 900 with about 25k on the clock. The final drive chain is starting to sag, and so I thought I'd tighten it up, but noticed that my rear chain adjusters are just about near the end of their adjustment. I haven't measured across the links yet, but I suspect that with 25K, this is probably the original chain and its near the end of its life. If I change the chain, do I need to also change the front and rear sprocket too? I thought I remember something about it not being a good idea to mix new parts with old parts which could create uneven wear. Also, the chain that came on this bike (being that it was from the 80's) was a standard chain. Would I see much improvement in any areas with an O-ring chain, or an X-ring chain?... or are those just for extended life? Also, I noticed the brake pads are getting worn down. They are about at the 1mm service limit. I was just going to change them out, but a fellow biker friend of mine said he would do rotors too. i told him my rotors looked fine, not glazed or cracked or worn thin. He said cross-drilled rotors are more likely to crack and that they are probably old and I should just do them too. I don't know about that one but what do you think? |

I have ,900R on 85 plate,A1.It has 32000 miles running original chain within tolerances. If yours is going out of adjustment, replace it and the sprockets its a no brainerThat is where all the power goes after all and if that was to go wrong ouch!!.
Replace the pads yes and i think your talking about your disc's as well .There is tolerances for these in the Kawa manual if you need them i can dig them out ,if they are within tol why replace. Cheers Nedski |

so you're saying when I replace the final drive chain I need/should also replace the sprockets too? Even if the sprockets look fine and aren't worn, its best to do all of them together as a set?
And yes, rotors are the same as discs. Thanks. |

As a rule i would always change both at the same time even for peace of mind if nothing else.Over here there is kits chain and sprockets.Don't know anyone who replaces individually unless to play with gearing.
Tolerances for discs as follows Front disc Standard 4.8-5.1 mm Service Limit 4.5 mm Rear disc. Standard 6.8 -7.1 mm Service limit 6.0 mm Hope this helps Cheers Nedski P,S i run a scottoiler great tool a must for chain drive .
