i am trying to measure the float height on my carbs and am having a few problems, first of all what is a good way to mount the carbs perfectly level??
and my service manual says that the level should be .5+-1mm above zero line, using the top of the float bowl as the zero line .... does this mean that the fuel should be anywhere from half a mm below the top of the float up to 1.5 mm above the top of float??? if so my measurement was at about 7 mm above the float, so this might be the cause of some of my problems.. which way should i bend the hangers to lower the fuel height?? up and out or down and in towards the valve?? any help is appreciated |

I did my GPZ a few years ago. I tried the measurement way and the bike never ran right. I removed the carb assembly (all 4 as one unit), clamped it to the side of a table. I then hooked up a temp fuel supply (higher than the carbs) and put clear tubes on the float drains and routed the open ends higher than the float chambers. I opened the drains and turned on the fuel. The fuel in the clear tubes will match the level in the float chambers. On the ones that were off, I found that I could remove the float chamber and with a small screw driver carefully adjust the tab on the float and recheck. This is the most accurate way to adjust the level. I believe that the zero line is the seam between the carb body and the float chamber, + should be higher than the seam. Also, I think that if your carbs are mounted at an angle on the bike, they should be held at that angle when checking the fuel level. One more thing, you need to use gasoline so BE CAREFUL of the fumes. Rick

In most all carbs I've worked on the float level is adjusted by bending the tab that touches the float valve, nothing else unless the float is hitting the chamber (or you dropped it and stepped on it). The zero line is the reference, holding the carb in it's normal position the fuel in the chamber should be no higher than 1.5mm above the line and no lower than .5mm below the line. The carbs must be assembled to do this measurement using the clear tube if the carb is mounted at an angle the measurment is taken midway between the high and low ends of the zero line. To adjust the level, hold the carb in a upright position, GENTLY push the float up until it stops, the fuel will follow the float, if you bend the valve tab on the float so the float stops lower, then the fuel level will be lower and of course the reverse, if you bend the tab so the float moves up so will the fuel level.
