Default Cleaning the gas tank

so I am not making the power i was 2 days ago. after pulling and cleaning the carbs i noticed the float bowls have deposits of a rusty looking powder. So i know i need to clean my tank and I know to use a parts cleaner and some washers, my question do i need to remove the pet **** or fuel floaters to avoid damage to the hardware within the tank?

I remove the petcock and fuel ports that I can to get the tank as clean as possible, not only since that will help drain whatever you clean the tank with, but to inspect them & related filter screens, etc. I remove the tank ring as well.

Don't forget to take out the fuel gauge sending unit. I wish you the best of luck but when mine did that I cleaned it and 2 months later I was seeing the rusty powder in the float bowls again. I finally gave up trying to clean it and used a POR 15 liner kit on it.

did the por 15 work well for you? I have heard thar after a few months or year that the coating breaks down and then you have plastic trash in your tank. I am not 100% sure about this paticular application but i assume it is a form of tank liner

I actually ended up running a fuel system cleaner and an octane booster in back to back tanks and fine tuned the carbs a little better and that seems to have done the trick.

I put the POR 15 in mine early this past spring. It's held up and preformed flawlessly so far. The liner that is poured in after the cleaning and etching stages looks like a slivery/grey colored paint thats got a high concentration of metallic in it. I'm not sure what it actually is but it doesn't smell like paint. I've heard the same thing about Kreem liners but I've also heard reports that this is caused if you don't allow ample curing time.
