Default Need help with 1986 zx600r ninja!!

I recently bought a 1986 ninja zx600r, this thing will crank and crank and wont start with the electric start, put it in second, push it, let out the clutch and give it full throttle and it will start right up and then just rev it up a little and it will run and idle fine. After you get it started by pushing it ,its fine and when you shut it off will start back up with the electric start, but it seems if you let it sit for more than 4 hours or its cold it wont start with the electric start. It smokes just a little when you rev up to about 9000rpms. I'm not sure whats wrong with it though. This is my first bike and would like to get it running so its reliable.Timing chain?rings?kickstand safety kill switch?carburetor? Anybody have any ideas? Thanks

Do you use the choke when you try to start it with the starter?

It's your battery.

Remove it from the bike.
Open up the caps and inspect for fluid height.
If any of the 6 cells are low top up with di-ionized water only.(drugstore)
Charge the battery for 8-10 hours at a rate of 2amps/hour.
Reinstall battery, soft brass wire brush can be used to clean up the battery contacts/posts and give your wire ends a quick brush.

But a tube of dielectric grease, read up on the web what it does and treat the areas on your bike with it if you plan on keeping it.

Smoke at 9000rpm with it's age I would accept as normal wear a tear over time. Try and keep it a bit below that when riding.

Get a proper manual and read it as well.

Advice on starting the bike when cold,

Get you bike pointed in the right direction. Put all your gear on except helmet and gloves.
Apply full choke, start bike.

Once started, tap it back a bit so the idle settles down as it doesn't need to be on full choke. (At this point with my bike it idles at about 1500rpm) At first it might be a bit rough, not sound smooth etc, this is normal as the choke makes the bike act a bit strange and you can expect the rpm's to be a bit jumpy.

Put on your helmet, and gloves and get on the bike.
Tap the choke back a bit more, find 1st gear and ride off. 250 yards later once you are rolling along turn the choke off.

This is what I do to get my 84 Ninja 900 going. From fist start to rolling up the road is maybe 1 minute at most.
