Default 1990 ninja 250 no start/keep running

hey all, new to the forum, I am an automotive mechanic so I am familiar with terms and parts, anyway here is my problem. I just got the bike, its 1990 ninja 250r and I needed a gas tank and the carb holder boots. Just got them in hooked up the gravity/vacuum feed to the fuel valve and everything, When I crank it the carb overflows. If I plug the overflow with my finger it will start, but then it stalls and sputters. Any help would be appreciated

Both carbs? Sounds like a stuck float. Dumb question... it is the overflow and not the drain right?

aight dumb question. I have taking apart the carb with my friend, it turns out the carb was leaking gas at the float gaskets. Anyway, I started cranking again, and the fuel has stopped ooozing out the carb! And the motor is finally seeing fuel and trying to start. Now this is all the hoses I have via the fuel system. I have one lead from the tank, and as I was told its a vent. So I ran the huge hose from the tank to the front of the bike, and is open for the vent. A vacuum line from carb to the fuel valve and one from the fuel valve to the carb. Now heres is the question. as the bike was cranking, I saw smoke (exhaust) coming from right below the carb on the motor/transaxle housing. is that supposed to be like that? wow I am so new to bikes! sorry this is sooo long

ok.
first question - you kinda figured it out. make sure the screws are TIGHT
second question - are you sure its coming from the exhaust ? could it be your starter getting hot or a wire getting hot ? could be its just coming thru the joint where the front half of the exhaust plugs into the rear half.

bottom line guys. I am not a moron, I know that motors dont need an evap system to run, however if there is an open vacuum line, it could mess up the idleor cause a no start depending on vaccuuum. so I have fuel, I have spark. I can start it with starting fluid, but can not get it to idle. so its either fuel amount or huge vacuum leak, the carb is sealed, cleaned non sticky floats. what else u guys got? n e help appreciated

i told ya that hole is for CRANKCASE VENTALATION. it runs to the airbox.
in your case if you can get it to run on carb cleaner and not on the carbs then its a fuel delivery problem. i would say its prob. the pilot jets are clogged or you have some vent lines plugged that shouldnt be, might also be the needle is too low or the floats are too low.
