Default First oil change questions

I plan to ride the Trail of Tears here in a couple weeks, but I really want to get my first oil change in before I go on this trip. Am I going "hurt" anything if I change the oil after, say, only 400 miles? Or should I just wait 'til afterwards? I'll only be putting about 140 miles on the bike round trip for this event.

Also, I notice most folks don't change to synthetic until the second oil change. Why is this? And which oil should I use for the first change?

Thx...

I think you'll be fine waiting unitl you reach 600 miles - after the trip, if I read you right. I changed with dino oil for the first change because I planned to change it again at 2,000 miles - just did it last night, full synthetic. I just change more often when it's new. 7,500 is too long for me. There's a vast array of opinions there, though.

Of concern to me is you're still breaking it in, and I believe both break-in camps (follow the manual .vs. ride it like you stole it) agree on 'don't just keep it at 1 speed for long.'

You won't hurt a thing by changing it before you go. If anything, it'll get rid of any break-in metals that may be floating around in the factory fill.

People wait to change to synthetic because they've been made to believe that synthetic oils prevent rings from seating. Simply false.
