I recently went to a motorcycle dealership, looking to buy a new 250r Ninja.
The dealer does not have any new 250s, but a little bit before I arrived somebody dropped off a bike, they were a beginner and couldn't handle it.. they had dropped it once, it has scratches on the fairing and the left turn signal cover popped off. The dealer said they will sell it to me AS IS for $3500 out the door. It is a 2008 Ninja 250, 2,000 miles on it. The previous owner bought it used (got ripped off, paid about $5k) and rode it a little bit and panicked after a drop and dropped it off at this dealer and took a cab home. Should I try to get a lower price? Is this a good price? Here are some pictures of the only visible damage on the bike: ![]() ![]() Also, first time bike buyer, is there anything I should ask the dealer before I finalize anything? Anyone's help and knowledge is appreciated, thanks! |

IMO take a pass and find one that hasn't fallen over.
I'm sure this one is fine. Google search "buying my first motorcycle", lots of good reads from motorcycle magazines and quite helpful too.

Saw a few on craigslist in brand new condition (only several hundred miles, never down) going for about 4000 to 4500. The 08+ are so rare now and out the door price will be about the same - all the dealers in my area are out of stock and waiting for 09's so that's not too bad of a price otd if there's nothing mechanically wrong with it. Looks like a pretty serious drop though. Talk it down to 3k or keep checking craigslist and you'll find a better deal.

I agree u must make clearance for that cosmetic repair, or u can ask the dealer to deliver it to u painted for the 3500.00 thats a cost that they can easily absorb i have some body repair experience and i can tell u, it should not take more than 5 hrs to get it done...

The damage to the fairing is not a major concern for me, this is my first bike, so cosmetics aren't a big deal ATM, I'm sure i'll drop it too. As long as it is mechanically sound I'm ok. I would, however, use it as ground to get a better price. Is there much I can do to ensure that the damage is only cosmetic?

I wouldn't personally get a dropped bike, especially since they want MSRP for it....are you kidding? They are looking for a sucker. And just so you know, if you get it, and ever want to replace the farirings, you're looking at probably around $1k. So...now you're up to $4,500. :p

Dude, what is your hurry?
If you really need a bike then buy the frikkin thing and be done with it. If it's about money you can always find a nicer example.

I was looking at KBB and NADA values for the used bikes and I think I'll get the bike for $3k out the door if they let me. If not, I'll look for somethin else. Again, first bike, I'll probably drop it too, so I don't care that it has a couple scratches. As long as it works, I'm good. The blinker cover is still with it, and looks like it can still be screwed back in.

i'd say pass. OR.... Negotiate a better deal.
See if you can get them to knock off 500.00 or so. check foot pegs, shifter (make sure its not bent out of shape), brake and clutch handles, check handle bars for any bends. Did the radiator take any damage? etc... look it over well. hell, take the seat of and look at the battery too. is it leaking? I fell off mine twice and it never got that scratched up. (then again, i went into a ditch full of grass mud and ... ticks at around 10mph. Still looks good as new. Second time was making a u turn. Anyway, that bike looks like it was a pretty nasty fall. but not hard enough to break up the fairing. surely the rest of it is good but have an experienced friend look it over. I got mine new with 1 mile it at about $4,100 (including jacket, gloves helmet, and disk locks and cable lock). That was about 2 months ago. So try to negotiate if you really want that specific one. Don't get tunnel sighted on it. |
