Being new to this I really don't know what to look for in a good jacket. Leather vs fabric? Kevlar pads? Back pads, sternum pads, etc.? What kind of leather and how thick? I live in central New York. Hot summers and cool falls. I am looking for a simple jacket that offers the best protection. And, I kind of have a budget. I really can't afford much above $200 ( I know, I shouldn't budget on safety). Am I out of luck with in this price range? It just gets confusing looking at the catalogs and the selection around where I live is limited. What do you all wear? I wish there was a "superstore" near me to look around at different styles, brands, and sizes. Any near Indianapolis (or in upstate New York)? I will be driving out there around the holidays. Thank you.

I'd say most brand names are good enough. Some are better than others, but being on a budget, does put the best out of reach. Leather is good in cold and for sliding on pavement. A lined mesh is ok for general riding. Most are armored. 200 bucks, is that excluding a helmet, or besides a helmet. Can't give prices, because they very. Maybe a hundred for a jacket, same for helmet, depending what kind you get. Gloves can be around 60. Something's better than nothing.

Check out this web site. Some good jackets for all weather.
They took over the Belstaf line of motorcycling gear from the 1970s. British MotorCycle Gear - Jackets

Check out Iron Pony's website. They have a ton of gear on clearance right now. I got my Alpinestars jacket on ebay. I was lucky to find one my size and the color I wanted that had only been used a few times. You could try that, too.

I'm new here, but had the same issues with trying to find the best gear for my money and I found LeatherUp.com was a pretty good site to find discounted and reasonably priced gear. Also try Ebay.

^yes New enough is a great outfit.
I like the Joe Rocket mesh for hot weather. I'd also look at the offerings from Olympia motorsports After that when money is not object motoport for kevlar clothing |
