So I went skiing today like I do every sunday in the winter and I came down the hill like usual but the slope was more icy then usual and it was snowing pretty hard and I went off a jump some kids built in the middle of one of the runs and if I would have seen it I would have been fine with going off it. Since I didnt see it the jump took me by surprise and I went down HARD. I woke up to 2 ski patrol girls standing over me and another hoping off the snowmobile and my girlfriend sitting next to me holding my leg. after 7 hours in the ER I now have to have surgery to repair my torn ACL and a partially torn menicus on my left leg

Thanks for the kind words. The skiing was awesome up until I went down. started at about 830am and I went down around 8pm it was one of the last runs we were making down before we were going for dinner. It is nice to be able to ski/snowboard every weekend during the winter I have about 8 different ski resorts within 1.5 hour drive of my house. I doubt I can try to sue them for my injury because of the risk that goes along with the sport. If everyone who got hurt on the slopes turned around and sued the resorts there would be no public skiing at all. One good thing is my insuraance policy has a short term disability from work payout that will pay me every week the same amount as if I was working for the whole time im out of work up till I think 30 weeks or so. Keyda congratz on the expected child. Shoot for like the 9th of july to give birth then the baby can share my bday

Ouch, that's gotta suck.
Go see if you can rent a Cryo-Cuff somewhere, it'll really help with the pain and swelling. When you are able make sure to get some good physiotherapy, it will most certainly help with your recovery as well. And buy a decent hinged knee support, it will protect and support your knee once you are more mobile. Of course, none of these should detract from the "waiting on hand and foot" therapy you are receiving now. Best of luck.

Man that's a bummer. Here's hoping the therapy progresses smoothly, and quickly.

The stuff the doctor may or may not have told you: - It is pretty major surgery to repair your ACL. They will put you under general anesthesia and will probably have to spend at least one night in the hospital. - You will likely wake up with your leg in a machine that is flexing your knee. Your therapy will begin immediately and you will be walking, with the aid of a immobilizing brace, the next day. - It will take at least 8 weeks before the graft has healed and your knee is stable, but your leg strength will be no where nearly normal. By the end of 12 weeks, you should be able to return to normal activities, but forget about activities like jogging, playing raquetball, etc. Recovery After ACL Reconstruction What the doctors won't tell you: - It would be 18 months before I was able to walk up and down stairs completely pain free. They take the bone/ligament graft from your patella tendon, probably the same knee that was injured (no sense cutting both knees). Nearly all of the pain I felt came from where they took the graft from. - When they say "normal" activity what they mean is walking. After 4 years, I am just now feeling close to 100% and even now, jogging can be painful. I just got back from playing in the snow and my knee was sore afterwards from all of the ackward positions you end up in when walking on uneven surfaces. Hiking on trails will remind me pretty quick to take it easy. - My therapist did not recommend weight lifting and placed a lot of emphasis on riding a bike. Well... weight lifting is probably not a good idea, which I tried in order to strengthen my leg. It did not really do much and it would make my knee sore. Riding a bike is OK, but I do not think it worked very well. What worked best? Walking. When I started walking more, I saw very rapid improvements. I did invest in a stationary bike though, which I rode 3 times a day for 15 minutes for the first 12 weeks. Its a good thing. - When your leg feels stronger and you feel the urge to run... resist it. Running is bad. Instead, walk up hill. If you walk briskly, it is almost as good as running and it is a lot less stressful. - Take every opportunity to rehab your knee. I would stand on my bad leg while brushing my teeth, I would do leg lifts while watching TV, I would go for walks, ride the bike, etc... One of the best things I did to help my leg was to put some faux stone up in my kitchen, which required me to get up and down off the floor a lot, and to sit cross-legged while I worked. It is surprising how much flexibility and strength is required to do just everyday kinds of things. The sooner you get back to working and doing what you normally do, the better. Good luck and welcome to the club!

P.S.
The only reason why you might not be able to ride after 12 weeks would be from not having enough flexibility to comfortably get your feet up on something like a sport bike. On a cruiser, you should not have any trouble, except for having enough leg strength to keep it from going over if you tip it over too far.

The reason I mentioned legal action is because if it is like you said - kids build a jump there where there shouldnt have been, then there was no reason for you to expect it there. Know what I mean? The kids created a dangerous situation that you unfortunately discovered. It is up to the ski place owners to make sure the marked ski trails are safe for everyone to use.
I messed up my knee on a green trail several years ago, I went down while making a left hand turn - my lower leg stopped and my upper leg and body kept twisting and.... "POP!!" goes my knee. I was over a year before my leg stopped going out on me at random moments or before I could even jog or run with some confidence it wouldnt give out on me.

well the reasoning is partly justified. the ski company maintain the piste and should ensure that it's safe for use... but skiing's an extreme sport, it's impossible to keep the piste immaculate and i suppose you could say you should be looking where you're going.... but that's hard to do on snow as dips and jumps are very hard to spot.
I doubt you'd get very far at all if you tried legal action. if you go skiing often, i'd imagine you have some kind of health insurance anyway... you'd be silly not to. |

I was not thinking in monetary terms for him. Like I stated above, the ski trail was in a dangerous condition they should have prevented. One way for them to make sure of this in the future is to take them to court. Even if they are just found liable and ordered to pay for medical and disability for him.
