I had a old Suzuki two stroke triple, smelly and scary fast, that was a bad choice for me as a teen.

2 strokes have been dying out for a while...you can thank the EPA for that. theyre the reason we have 4 stroke motocross bikes now. however i think the biggest reason to switching to 4 strokes was Yamaha and the YZ426. AMA rules always stated that 4 strokes were allowed 200cc extra to compete with the 2 strokes (power issue).
with the EPA closing in on 2 strokes, Yamaha made the 426 and showed the world that a motocross bike could be a 4 stroke and be competitive in weight and performance. now the engines pretty much eclipse the performance of the old 2 strokes, since they have more torque, a broader powerband, and are nearly as light, and more horsepower to boot.

still...2 strokes rule. nothing like the "brap!" of a highly strung 2 stroke MXer!

4 strokes still can't touch 2 strokes without having significantly more CC's. And the new 4 strokes are not as maintenance free as the old ones.

When I was in high school, I has a 81 Suzuki PE 185. It was a great bike and it would pull the front end off the ground, when it hit the power-band, in all six gears.

Last year I got to ride a tricked out, bored-out, KTM 450 four-stroke and it was the nicest dirt bike I've ever ridden. It was putting out 55hp at the back wheel. To be honest, I don't miss 2-stokes.

thats why we have 250 and 450cc classes, instead of 125 and 250s! i never said they needed the same amount of CC's, quite the contrary. but 125s and 250s are still allowed to compete, but the 4 strokes are still given the 200cc advantage because they need it. however, the 4 strokes make more power then the 2 strokes in the same class (125 = 35 hp, 250 4 stroke = 42 hp...250= 50 hp, 450 4 stroke = 55+ hp). also add to that the increased torque and broader powerband and you have a machine that will have an advantage. less shifting, less clutch work, more traction, easier to ride.

its the same in superbike racing, where Ducatis are given 200 extra cc's to work with, giving they have 2 piston engines compared to the inline 4s of competitors.

and on the maintenence...i agree. on the 4's you need to do valve adjustments, you have cams to mess with, etc. 2 stroke...replace the piston and rings and you have a brand new top end! LOL less parts = easier and cheaper maintenence.

and i still prefer 2 strokes...but if they make the 250 4's with FI soon, ill probably upgrade one day!

Yeah, its impossible to find parts for old bikes now. I bought my 1985 kx 125 for $500, and I could part it out and make thousands of dollars! Parts for my bike are EXPENSIVE!! a brand new piston costs $150!

I'd still love to own one of these someday. Later disk brake equipped version, though.
