    Default For you train buffs

Went on a nice 200km ride yesterday and rode a steam train!

it was a beautiful day so we sat in the open air cars.

They then switched the engine to the "back" of the train and proceeded to push us out onto this trestle bridge, built in 1903. When one of the passengers asked why they did this they were told "Passengers are replaceable, this engine isn't, we have a guy ready to pull the pin on the engine in case the bridge goes, that way we won't lose the engine!"

Longest and highest trestle on the Kettle Valley line and third longest and highest in North America. 619' long, 238' high. Doesn't look like much from this side...

    but check out this side...

Read all about the railway here...

    KETTLE VALLEY STEAM RAILWAY

This is the same rail line that trikebubble posted about when they hiked it awhile ago.

Great pics. I love steam engines.

Here's a TopGear clip from the latest series that will interest you; a race between a Vincent, a Jag and a steam train:

Very nice! I love old steam trains. We got to see two of the trains come into the station in Durango this past weekend on the Durango and Silverton.

On the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic railroad it takes two engines (sometimes three) to make the 4 to 5 percent grade from Chama to Cumbres Pass. When they come to the first high trestle, the lead engine(s) disconnect(s) and go(es) over the bridge first, then the second or third proceeds with all of the cars. The trestle isn't rated for the weight of two of the engines at the same time. This practice isn't new; the Denver and Rio Grande did the same thing up throught the '60s when it was hauling freight over the line.

Maybe sometime in August then. We'll be prepping for our RL departure next weekend.

Nice pics. Looks like you had a great day. Thats the type of thing my wife and I love to do. Or we'll just head out to some of the many small towns around our city and just look for Museums or even Garage sales.

I'd love to go on a train ride like that. I go to Strasburg Railroad in Lancaster, Pa every couple of years, and I really enjoy it, but riding in the mountains would be really different. I am due for a Strasburg run, so I was thinking I'd take the bike this time. Probably in about 3 weeks. Love a good train ride, then a visit to the ChooChoo Barn model railroad. I'm never growing up.

The last time I was in a steam train was the one operated at Dollywood... it was fun until the wind changed direction and we were choking on coal smoke and ash

Naw a couple of trips thru the berkshires every week can get really old really quick, especially when you can't get over the top.

Nice old equipment tho........better than some of the modern junk we have.
