well, the problem, in my view, goes well beyond police actions to the actions of society as a whole. As I think about it, society has become a lot more aggressive over the years, and a lot more toward police as well. In a sense, society has brought police actions on themselves given the treatment they hand out. I know...I'm generalizing.

Police in general put up with a great deal of grief from people sometimes, and it's not surprising that they become "hardened" to it. A lot of it has to do with the police department's leadership too. In my son's case, the department is very strict and really clamps down on inappropriate actions (at least what I hear from him so far). The Chief seems to be very aware of the image of the department and stresses public service a lot. I don't know if that's a common theme in departments, especially bigger ones, but as a resident of the community, it's refreshing to see.

That's a fallacy, studies show that violent crime is on the decline. Flipping on the news might make you think the world is coming to an end, but its just rabid sensationalism and the quest for ratings.

You're not saying that society in general deserves to be punished and ruled with an iron fist are you?

Parking enforcement officers also put up with a lot of crap from people but they grin and bear it, because patience is a virtue when you're expected to deal with the public. If a police officer finds that the stress of his/her work is starting to get to them and they can no longer do their job effectively then its up to him/her to talk to their supervisor about getting the help they need. They can't take it out on the next person that looks at them funny.

I was speaking of general attitude of people, not with regard to crime statistics.

well, it all comes back to a respect thing, and the public at large is showing less and less respect to people. Even customer service people get crap. People never stop to think that 1) they are only shooting the messenger, and 2) they can accomplish more by talking calmly to someone. I generally treat those situations with a lot of respect because I know the crap those people get every single day. I am polite but firm, and will generally ask nicely to speak with a supervisor and then talk politely to them as well. Most times I'll get what I'm after and both the customer service workers and myself have a more pleasant day for it. There are SOOOO many that fire off at the first hint of an issue, and then they wonder why they get treated like crap. I don't blame the customer service worker, nor the police officer for giving crap back when they get it.

Then again, I'd just as soon shoot them and eliminate a sociatal problem!

Too true.. Good manners in the face of small adversities is a dying art.
