Once you get up and running, it might be an excuse for me to get up to Canada . . .

I've stayed at B&B's lots of times in the UK and here. The ones I liked most were somewhat historic and the owners seemed to enjoy telling the stories. Also important to be in good repair and clean with no damp smells (older houses). That big breakfast is the real thing that makes someone decide to come back though. Getting a "continental" breakfast at a B&B is not good.

I love to stay at B&Bs. On my trip to Maine last year, my wife booked only B & Bs. We stayed at a different one each night all the way up the coast. It was a great trip. It was kind of funny because when we got to Bar Harbour, the B&B had 4 couples staying there - 3 of us couples were from Texas - LOL.

You get to meet some great people and have some interesting food. Much better than a motel/hotel, and usually less expensive.

Like you, I always try to book a B&B first, as I find them much nicer to stay at than some hotel.

When I used to travel for business a lot, I stayed at B&B's about 98% of the time, and had just 1 bad experience out of hundreds of stays.

It's amazing to me how different traveling in mainland North America is from traveling in other places around the world. Internet? TV? When you travel, LIVE. What difference does it make what the weather is going to be the next day? So you see it and it's going to rain. Are you going to give that day up? Who holes up and watches TV?

The quote I think I managed to correctly grab was in response to a review of Ireland B&B's where there was limited amenities. In Europe, you have to go out of your way to get a room with a private bath - it's simply the way things are. In Ireland life is about being with people. The locals bring their strings, reeds and winds as well as vocal cords to the local pubs and break out in song. They love to talk with vistors. The night life is phenomenal. What more does one need than a bed to sleep (for those few hours)? Yes, a full breakfast is nice (I've never been to one in Ireland that didn't offer some kind of hot breakfast) but how many eggs, "Canadian"-like bacon (ham), red and white blood sausage, and tomatoes can one eat?

In the case of Ireland and Scotland, climbing up cliffs and 800 year old castle steps in a driving rain is not exactly fun.

It helps to know whether to plan on staying out of it by hitting a sight-seeing bus or the nearby shopping district instead. Likewise, until we got into a traffic jam, we didn't know the road to one of our intended destinations was blocked by a land slide. Had we been able to catch the news that morning, we could have made other plans and avoided hours of wasted time in traffic.

Likewise, some of use like to keep in contact with people at home and catch up on things happening at home. The internet allows people to do that without a toll charge.

I never had a problem with a shared bath, though when you are part of a group of people all getting ready to go at the same time, it can be a pain to wait for the bathroom to be freed up. If it's just me, I don't care.

As far as the breakfast, it's not that I want that every day - it's that I want the choice. On my last trip there, we didn't stay at any place more than once. The problem is, some places only offered cold cereal. So, if I chose that the previous morning instead of the cooked breakfast, it meant that I was stuck with cereal again if the next place didn't offer anything else.

On days when you're going hiking in the highlands or a windy cliff side in Northern Ireland, you really want a big, hot breakfast to keep you rolling until the late lunch your likely to get.

The fact is, while many of the B&B's got the concept that they were receiving guests from different countries with different lifestyles, others seemed content with requiring you to do things their way only. My opinion: if you aren't there to make the customer feel at home away from home while experiencing the country, don't go into the business.

I was happy to embrace the culture of Ireland and Scotland all day long, but at the end of a long day, sometimes a little TV and chatting online is exactly what I wanted. Besides, in those places that had TV, it was nice catching shows I've never seen before on the BBC and Sky.

a nice comfy bed, good bathroom facilities, and a hearty breakfast in the morning.

that's what makes me think about visiting a B&B again.

When on bike trips, it's good to have somewhere to park the bike, and if they're flexible on the times that breakfast is served, then that's all the better.

coupled with a friendly host/hostess, i'll be recommending it to friends and family.

Thanks Steve, and we intend to offer all of those.

Good sound-proofing between rooms. Don't care to sit next to someone at breakfast who might have heard what we were doing during the night.

Bed and breakfast in British Colombia. Definitely going on my bucket list. I've had my imagination sparked by some of the posts you put up describing your area: eagles, wolves, valleys, rivers. Coming to see you in say, couple of years when I have more money + freedom.

Sounds good.
If you ride up, your bike can be locked inside at night to so no worries there.

have stayed in many b&b. one that stands out after 25 years is Red Mullions in Oxford --> Red Mullions Guest House. still have fond memories. have also stayed in many crap houses that i wish i could forget. do lots of research before making a reservation anywhere.
