I was going to use the title "My Nut Is Too Tight" as an attention grabber, but decided better not. I have a dilemma here. I totaled my Jeep in September and the one I just bought doesn't have a trailer hitch yet (prob can't afford it until next spring). Anyway, I went to winterize my camper last weekend, and I can't move the camper into the open to get a good angle at removing the drain plug on my hot water heater. It has a square head on it and my sockets won't fit on it. I tried a gator grip socket and about ruined it so that was a no go. Home Depot and Sears doesn't seem to sell a #8 square 1/2 inch socket. I do have an idea that could work. The socket extension that fits into the ratchet is square, but I don't have one that would fit over the drain plug, but going to Home Depot in a little while to see if I can find one that might work.
If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it. I'd hate to keep 6 gallons of water in the tank over the winter and have it get ruined. The tank access is tough to get to, and with a bum right ankle and no way to move the camper into the open, and not having a way to turn the square drain plug has me completely baffled at this point: http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42...mperaccess.jpg ![]() ![]()

It's hard to see, but is their a straight line from the plug out, or is it hidden behind that line going to the gas valve thingie?
I wonder if you could find a length of square metal stock that fits over the plug, and then get a handle welded on the end...or use vice grips or something like that?

ps. just how big and heavy is that thing, a few pals and you might be able to lift on the hitch, and a few more to push it.
Or do you have a welder? Even just a cheapest buzz box ?

Well, I went to the Home Depot and I was told to get a 12 point socket. Of course I came home with one that's too small. And, yes it is hidden behind the gas line which makes it more difficult. As for getting friends and moving it forward, I'm afraid of doing that because its at the top of a hill....I could just see the dang thing taking off down the hill, of course the tongue would dig into the ground. Hope it wouldn't get to that. Will try a larger 12 point socket next.

I've had them where a short handled, wide jawed adjustable worked. Seeing as its metal, a liberal dose of WD40 is also recommended.
