So I make an appointment last night to get my 15k mile check up. They want $500 to do it! WTH!! The guy said it takes 5 hours because they have to pull the valves apart to check the clearance and then replace the valve gasket. Is this absolutely necessary? Check the fluids. Check the brakes. Tighten the belt. But mess with the valves?

    Sorry. Rant over.

Don't neglect your valves. They tighten over time. Clearances get smaller. Can be bad news. You could do it yourself. There's a tutorial around somewhere.

The clearances do get smaller? I figured that was just a line to charge more tech time. But, that's part of what makes me mad. A lot of the stuff I can do myself, I just don't have the time. I work 80 hours a week, and when not working I try to make sure my kids don't forget what I look like.

Yeah the valve thing is real. On my bike it is not bad. My valve clearances can be adjusted with a locking nut. Bikes like yours have shims. I've never seen it done. You have to have a set of shims in various sizes to make it all work.

Buy a 1600. Hydraulic valves = no adjustment

There's always that route I guess. Might be a bit more than the $500 for the 15k check-up.

Looks like i may get another free bike wash. Wind and rain takes dirt off eventually, but does very little for bugs

Is it raining in your neck of the woods? Today is the first sunny day in a string of 5 or 6 sunny days in a row!
