Default Where did Bling Bling Come From?

    Did you Know?

"Bling-bling" is a hip hop slang term which refers to expensive jewelry and other accoutrements, and also to an entire lifestyle built around excess spending and ostentation. According to the Urban Dictionary [1], "bling bling" is originally Jamaican slang, referring to the imaginary chime sound produced from a diamond reflecting light often used in animated cartoons. The term is thought to be derived from the onomatopoeia of a visual effect used to denote light glistening off metal or jewels. In Britain this is usually called simply "bling", and is associated with chav culture. The term could also be derived from a contraction of the brand name Breitling, a brand of Swiss watches known for expensive, over-the-top, flashy design and products

I had to look it up, pretty funny since we use it on this site allot!

As far as the HipHop/RAP roots. A Group/RecordLabel called CashMoneyMillionaires/CashMoneyRecords released a song and video called BlingBling. And yes it was all about the Diamonds, Riches and Fancy Cars.

Not sure if the original group still remains but some of the first members of said group that are still in the limelight are Baby, MannieFresh and LilWayne (WEEZY).

Actually, it is a little known fact that the term “bling bling” actually originated from the Bblingka Bblingka Tribe of Southern Bblingkastan in South Africa. The Blingka Blingka would adorn their donkey carts with large spheres of silver and gold, some even adding additional spheres outside the wheels, known as “Sbpynnarz” in order to attract more attention from the females of the ribe. The male Blingka Blingka would hire drummers to sit in their Blingka carts (called Kaddylicz) and play very large bass drums as loud as possible. They would ride their Kaddylicz up and down the local pasture road in an attempt to woe the local females. This spectacle went on for years untilthe villagers tired of the noise and hired outside villagers to patrol the Bblingka Blingka and hand out fines for excessive drum beating. The patrols were simply known as “The Myan”
Eventually the custom died out, that is until a local Blingka Blingka invented a game where a round ball was purposely rebounded off the ground and deposited in a bucket. The game became so popular that many Blingka Blingka became very rich and wealthy playing. These wealthy Blingka Blingka had the power to do whatever they wanted. “The Mayn” could not enforce the town laws agianst these game players. The players eventually resurected the old tradition of “Blingka Blingka” as it had come to be known.
As the centuries passed, as with any society the commeners attempted to emulate the famous game players. And it has become what we know today as “bling bling”.
