Default Drug problem

The other day, someone at a store in our town read that a methamphetamine lab had been found in an old farmhouse in the adjoining county and he asked me a rhetorical question, ''Why didn't we have a drug problem when you and I were growing up?''
I replied: I had a drug problem when I was young:

I was drug to church on Sunday morning.

I was drug to church for weddings and funerals.

I was drug to family reunions and community socials no matter the weather.

I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults.

I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn't put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me.

I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I uttered a profane four-letter word.

I was drug out to pull weeds in mom's garden and flower beds and cockleburs out of dad's fields.

I was drug to the homes of family, friends, and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline, or chop some firewood; and, if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would have drug me back to the woodshed.

Those drugs are still in my veins; and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say, and think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin; and, if today's children had this kind of drug problem, America would be a better place.

an oldie...but other things to remember. when i was a kid, we didn't strap kids into car seats, we survived, mom & dad chain smoked in the car windows up, we survived, we rode in the back of pickup trucks, we survived....

today we make so many excuses and everyone has a syndrome or two and thus become a victim....

today we make so many excuses and everyone has a syndrome or two and thus become a victim....

Yep! And one of the biggest syndromes is blaming everyone or anyone else rather than taking responsibility or suffernig the consequences. We have become a society of "It's not my fault, not my problem, not my responsibility, not my job, someone else is to blame." Seems folks think it's just a lot easier to let em have their ways than to dish out discipline.

Being old school, I believe some good old-fashioned butt whoopin's, mind your manners, do your chores, take away the priveliges discipline would go a long ways in correcting a lot of "society's problems" today.

Society - ain't that all of us??

Excellent message!! That is basically how I was raised and i still believe in that "old world" way! It is the "not my fault" mentality that is wrong today. Everyone needs to be responsible for their own actions and stop running to lawyers! Most people who sue for something stupid should instead sue their parents for failing to bring em up right!!!!Like Charlie Daniels sings...Take a big tall tree and a short piece of rope and let em swing till the sun goes down!!!! No more of this 3 strikes, or its societies fault, they failed him. Its their parents fault for not giveing em a swift kick in the a*s with a size 12 work boot or a ceack with ma's wooden spoon!! Teachers now let kids get away with more cause the parents will take the kids side, if I got in trouble in school, I got in worse trouble at home!!!! The country has to change its way of thinkin or we are in deep s*&t!!!!

We're dragging our 12 yr. old right now. He thinks we are so unfair but we want only the best for him. I really feel for today's generation because they are so soft. When they get out into the dog eat dog real world many of them are not going to be able to cope.

I think you're right in some respects. Kids today have too much STUFF. Video games, computers, cell phones, cars - you name it and most have it - and it is GIVEN to them. No earning it by doing chores and saving allowances. They don't have to be creative to entertain themselves. When I was a kid we had a TV if we were lucky and got to watch it in the evening if we had been good. For our main entertainment, we played backyard pick-up football, basketball, and baseball, dodge-ball, kick the can, hide and seek and other things that required active participation and exercise, or at least some movement. In bad weather, we read books, played board games and did things that required some thinking and use of your brain.

Sometimes I wonder if progress is really progressive in some areas.

Remember...I have a dr's perscription for what ailes me. At least I know the difference of going to the pharmacy and getting my drugs instead of a neighboorhood drug dealer.
