Tickets For Good Driving
Dozens of Central Texas drivers got pulled over Thursday for doing absolutely nothing wrong. Travis County deputies kicked off what has become a controversial reward program. You know that heart-stopping feeling you get when seeing the flashing red lights of law enforcement in the rear view mirror? Well, you won't see that if you're a good driver, but you may get pulled over. Getting pulled over for doing nothing wrong may not sound right to a lot of people. Travis County Deputy Derrick Taylor says his job is to not only look for bad drivers, but reward and encourage friendly drivers. "The big cargo truck that was in front of you and you allowed to get in front of you, that was a very nice thing you did, and because it was a safe thing, we want to reward you with a Round Rock Express baseball tickets," Taylor tells a good driver. Free baseball tickets for good drivers - some like it and don't mind being pulled over. "I was really surprised, but it's cool though. I thought I was like in trouble so [it was] a little nerve-wracking," driver Erin Baker said. Other drivers are saying it's an inconvenience. Deputy Taylor says they're not trying to scare anyone. Deputies will simply wave to good drivers and politely ask them to pull over to the side. "What I'm trying to focus on, and the only thing I'm trying to focus on, is rewarding someone for good driving. There are going to be some people who are not going to like it because the only experience they have with law enforcement is negative," Taylor said. Drivers like Baker say they'll take this ticket over a traffic ticket any day. "Yeah, I will probably go with my boyfriend or something," Baker said. This program will last until this weekend, and it stems from one that worked well some 20 years ago, except back then, deputies were handing out money -- up to $50. No one complained then until the money ran out.

I once had a campus officer pull me over as I was driving to my job destination in my state provided vehicle. She was following me for some time...turning when I turned...until I finally turned into a parking lot...stopped the car and got out to go ask her why she was following me (no kidding). She immdeiately hopped out of her car...opened the back door and grabbed a coffee mug in a cardboard box and handed it to me while telling me she was following me because I was a good driver (

When my girlfriend's family was moving from Texas to California they were pulled over shortly after crossing the state line-the CHP officer stopped them just to say "welcome to California" ...

I can just see it now, they pull me over for my good driving habits, while I'm in the process of dumping a good beer, I hope the reward is worth more than that beer I just dumped out.

It may change soon. The state loses $22 million a year in federal funding by not having an open container law. Another irony is they don't let you buy beer on Sundays, Holidays or after 9PM. Go figure. As far as me getting pulled over, I once was given a pen for having my seatbelt buckled. Last edited by CTRider : 03-10-2006 at 11:46 AM. |

I couldn't care less about sports with the exception of the original. One on one bed wrestling. I don't care if he is lonely or bearing gifts! I don't want to talk to cops.

heh, I got pulled over in my Cadillac a few days ago by a cop, he just wanted to welcome me to Texas, and admire the car. We spent like an hour talking about what I'd done to fix it up, differences in years of Caddys, etc.
Turned out he was as fanatical about Caddys as I am, but the reason he pulled me over was my Florida tags, to welcome me to Texas...this state sure is entertaining.

Some of the most careful drivers out there are the ones who don't want to get pulled over.

I'd have to ask them - "now that you've stopped me and wasted my time, I will now have to speed to get to my destination on time. Are you okay with that?". I'd be ticked. Just leave me alone and we'll get along just fine.

It seems odd, I never seen this before.
Whats to stop the cops from pulling you over for "good driving" and gets a good look in your vehicle only to now have probable cause to search for X. |

That's kind of a risky program for the reason that most have caught onto ...1) there are laws to protect people from being detained (traffic stop) without probable cause and 2) what happens if they happen to see the dead body in the back seat? ...would you still get my baseball tickets? Inquiring minds want to know.
