Default Paging the Audiophiles on the board

    So....

I'm a former audiophile myself having spent the majority of my teenage years and dollars on hi-fi equipment. Stereo Review Magazine was my best friend, i once had all copies over a 7 year period...those were the days, old analog equipment just sounds better than our new digital crap.

anyway, as I posted recently, my old amp just bit the bullet and i want to replace it with something suitable and then I got the bug again and now I want a reel to reel deck for seveal reasons, first I could never afford one when i was a kid, second its mechanical and i love mechanical stuff and third, my son is a budding musician has natural talent that needs to be fostered and a good reel to reel in conjunction with a mixing board would make great session tapes & such...

anyway, in my search on ebay for equipemtn i came across a former top of the line professional reel to reel deck...any of yall have an opinion? this one is a 2 track unit but has the 4 track head to be installed...

    here it is

    http://cgi.ebay.com/PIONEER-RT-1050-...QQcmdZViewItem

The real deal would be to get my dream deck from my teenage years (these babies sold for near $1000 new in 1979) but still too pricey for my budget

I am one of those hooked on MP3's and the digital age...however...I do remember my brother having a wall full of Sansui equipment that he bought in Viet Nam and had it shipped home for when he returned. I remember him taping myself and my sisters as we played guitar and sang songs. That was a gazillion years ago!

thanks gene, yeah, i've found a few of these forums and other audio sites. my lack of attention over the years has dulled my status as an audiophile...

Eh, while you'll still find a few diehards (Mapleshade Records), by and far every maor label, and even a majority of the "audiophile" recording labels (Telarc, Chesky, Opus etc etc) have been recording digitally for years.

So if you really want a R2R machine, feel free (but I don't know what that has to do with your needing a power amp). But don't think it will help prepare your prodigy for a future in the recording indstry. For that you'll want to invest in an Apple laptop and some mics (you can even try recording with vintage tube mics if you're bored), then spend your time & money building a backyard studio. Noise isolation is really difficult.....

I hold the volume in my right hand, and the music comes out of the exhaust pipe. Now that’s audio!
My favorite song is “accelerating though first and second gear.” Think I’ll go play some tunes now.

My wife is keen on letting me know I have the volume turned up to high when I play my guitar.

As far as the RT909 goes, it has the exact electronics as an RT707, just takes big reels. RT707s are a little less pricy. Amps, the similar vintage Kenwoods and Pioneers have similar sound to your Technics. Pioneer SX750 on up if you want to replace your Integrated Amp with a receiver. (750s and up made in Japan, 650s and below, made in Korea.) The X50s-and the X80s are the best. When they went to a champagne color, they lost it IMHO. When Miss Aprilia and I combine our households, my Pioneer stuff will go in the garage, my A.P. Van Meter designed Phase Linear Series II stuff will go in the listening room upstairs.

Maybe you should invest in some McIntosh equipment? (it'll make your motorbike addicition look cheap in comparison).

Dave - Yes, I remember R2R, and loved it. Teac decks, Sansui 2000 amp, Pionier spaker system. This was my choice of decks http://cgi.ebay.com/beautiful-vintag...QQcmdZViewItem
Got it new in Nam. Finally let it all go when it hit 20+ years of age. Still played well though....needed to get with the digital age.

Is da bomb, they're still in business. Probably the only remaining US electronics company (that builds things in America).

Once you go tube....... Tube has a "warmer" sound than solid state. MacIntosh was regarded as the best of that era. My old Flame Linear combo and Thorens TD145 turntable sounds better than my buddy's all Krell component system with Krell CD. He switches to HIS turntable (VPI) and my stuff gets blown away!
