Looking for a good dependable and economical freezer for home use. Planing on getting a 1/2 cow & 1/2 a pig and need a good freezer.
I want a chest freezer and the wife wants a upright freezer. What's better (Chest freezer of course) and why

The chest types are more efficient.
When you open the door to remove anything, quite a bit of the cold air escapes the upright because of its design, and the freezer must cool the air that got in. If you live in an area where you have electrical blackouts, the chest will also keep the food frozen longer than the upright when there is no electricity. |

i dont know about efficiency, but when you have that chest freezer full to capacity, you will have a hard time getting to anything inthe bottom. or forget what you have because you cant see it.
i say upright

I agree with oldog. Chest is more efficient. Just organize it when you're packing it full of meat so you know where stuff is.

we're having this same debate at our house and the wife brought up the bad back factor. the chest type is harder on your back, both in loading and unloading. just some onfo to throw in the mix because we've not come to a decision yet.

we have a chest freezer and no matter how you plan your load, getting to the bottom SUCKS
when funds make themselves available, we will be switching to a upright model.

We have the chest freezer just for the simple fact that you can fit more in it because you are not working around shelves.

I've had both & will go upright every time. They don't hold quite as much & may be a little less efficient but those differences are very very minor and the ease of access to all the food far outweighs those small differences!!!
Just my experienced .02.

Sigh........................................If it were up to me I'd go with the chest so "the meat" will stay harder longer if/when the power goes out, but the wife is bound and dertermined "easier" to access and sort

OK, I'll jump in on this as well.
I think the upright is much more convenient to use for daily use. I don't really believe that the efficiency is much of a deciding factor... the frozen items are still frozen after opening the door and it doesn't take much to bring the temp down again. I've seen uprights that were horribly packed and disorganized. On the other hand, the chest is better for longer storage. You can plan ahead which items to transfer to your upright 'fridge/freezer. I too had a half cow the year before last and our medium size chest worked fine. We have several half milk crate type containers that we sort frozen items into. Not too hard to lift out and pick an item underneath. It also helps to keep an inventory sheet when you get that cow and pig... just remember to check off what you use. |

I gotta go with Deron and Gary on this one.
UPRIGHT! And, gotta agree with Deron - the "blue pill" will help with your other little problem, Joe! Hehehehe! http://www.smileycentral.com/sig.jsp...p=ZSYYYYYYYYUS

I've had both, and I don't think I could have a chest freezer these days. Bending over and getting stuff out of the bottom would destroy my lower back. But then you guys are young...

Upright, no contest.
I have had both, and prefer the upright. We have an upright now, and get 1/2 a cow, a pig, every year, plus whatever deer, turkey and small game I can manage to kill come hunting season. The wife also stocks up on fresh veggies and freezes them in the summer, power has gone out for 12 hours, no big deal, just dont open the freezer during a blackout! The biggest bonus, you can just reach in, and take out what you need. removing and replacing the frozen goods on the chest type is a pain in the backside, especially when you have to get that Easter ham out of the bottom. I don't even remember what brand we have, I think it starts with a G, but it's a frost free, and it's been plugged in for 5 years with no frost problems.
