Unhappy Veterans Day...sumthin is bugging me.

For the past week on the idiot box, we have been inandated with advertisements for "Veterans Day Sales". From various National Stores, but mainly from Macy's.

Does this rub anybody at all the wrong way? Or is it just me? Up here we don't tend to "celebrate" Remembrance Day.....We honour it, use the day to reflect on our past, and the loss of the men and women who have died while wearing our Nations Flag.
I know that Veteran's Day has a similar meaning to Americans, but when did it become another day for Big Stores to try and make an extra buck? I know their are a few stores up here that are open tomorrow (we most certainly are not)...but to make a Sale out if it.

I'm not religous, and for me the single most important Statuatory Holiday a country can observe is one to pay homage to it's fallen soldiers.

Seems like somebody somewhere in a Corporate tower has forgotten something.

Edit. This is in no way a poke at my American friends in any way....please do not take it that way. The majority of our TV advertising comes from the USA, and my comments are based on the advertisements from those US Stores I've seen on tv the past week.

everything is now a reason for a sale carlo. I'm saddened that Christmas is now just an excuse to shoppe.

regardless of religious beliefs, the idea of the Christmas holiday (peace on earth, goodwill toward man...etc)is now lost

Memorial Day weekend is one of the biggest shopping sale weekend of the year. I don't remember Veteran's Day being that way, but it certainly doesn't surprise me.

Hey, a good night's sleep is the foundation of any successful presidency.

Yeah, this sale, that sale..........bull$hit is going to far, everything and everybody is just trying to get a dip into your wallets and hard worked $$$ anymore. Long gone is curtousy, respect for self and others person or property.

Anymore is just focusing on buy, me, more....and me again. Toooooooo much advertising and commercials out there.......it is to drive a ordinary person nuckin futs.

Hey TB,

To me, Veterans day is for live veterans, memorial day is for fallen soldiers.

No disrespect intended. I was under the assumption that as it falls on the same day as Remembrance Day up here it was a day to pay respect to fallen soldiers.
My observation still stands, why can't we take at least one or two days off to pay respect, and yes Thank you's too to the members of a nations Armed Forces without Macy's trying to incorporate it into a Sale.

A random thought... remember when the older vets used to be distributing the poppy pins on this day? Does this still happen perhaps in a place far, far away from where I've been in the last, oh, 20-odd years? You're right Trike, there does seem to be growing and rampant consumerism each year and less and less of the 'good stuff', the things that really take practically no money but require just a moment's time of pause and reflection.

Does it still happen? You bet, it's a Canadian tradition.

I have a poppy on my lapel as we speak.
Look at my Avatar, we have a ltd. edition Canadian quarter with the poppy imprinted into it.

Ya Trike- I know it happens up north (we watch CBC, as you know hehehe) and applaud it. But sadly, I don't see it happen in the States anylonger... and certainly not like it was when I was growing up.

I don't know why it doesn't happen anywhere else. It is a tradition that was started based on a poem written by a Canadaina soldier in WWI. The poem is named "In Flanders Fields". It is just something that has been done for years and years up here. The local Legion's distribute the poppy's and collect donations. You can't really go anywhere the week leading up to Remembrance day and not see young Army Cadets selling poppies.

My mom is 79 years old, and she still sits at a table in the freezing weather to give out poppies. She makes me feel guilty by sending me one every year.

My personal thoughts are that I am grateful for all that the armed forces have sacrificed over the centuries. I don't think we should be the worlds police, and it makes me ill that so many lives have been lost due to politics, but I wouldn't be able to write these words if young men and women hadn't stepped up.

I still buy the poppies outside of Walmart. As far as the sales; who cares. There's a sale every week anyways. This week they mention veterans.
At least they're not forgotten.

I am at a loss for words to describe how I feel about companies exploiting days intended to honor the men and women who have and are serving our nation.

really every holiday's true meaning is completely lost to corporate greed.

We went to the Remembrance Day memorial this morning. Among the Civic Organizations that were called out and laid at wreath at the Cenetaph was............you guessed it......Wal-Mart.
