It has, definitely, cut the receivers for nicotine. I'm feeling that already.

My doctor gave me the blue pills, not the white ones. So, I'm getting full dose twice a day. I can feel it, that's for sure. You do feel the effects of the withdrawl, but your body doesn't know why anymore. It's kind of funny.

from the Chantix web site.

It's weird, it's like my body isn't sure what to feel. The confusion is working in my favor though. And, I'm not grumpy yet....That's my worst side effect, so I'm hoping that Chantix can help with that, at least. If I can get over that part, quitting will be easy.

I wonder how much the equivalent in cigarettes would have cost? I've heard of people putting the money they would have spent on cigarettes in a jar or something to see how quickly it adds up. Maybe the meds will pay for themselves. Either way, you can't go wrong!

That sure helps with the mental part of it. Smoking has become 2nd nature to me and I don't want to put my family through alot of attitude from me but, I really do need to quit myself, my dad died of a massive heart attack in 90 and I know smoking played a big part in his death, besides of the fact he was 150lbs overweight. Yea, I guess this is all about me.

I don't know but if you want to do the math, a carton costs $37 here in Wisconsin. And I had the potential to go through one every 2 weeks, so I figure 2 cartons a month. Obviously, the more you smoke, the more you'll save, ultimately.

I do like the idea of the jar...I'm gonna have to borrow that one. I stand to make a fortune in mad money. LMAO

my little contribution -

sense deciding to go to superbike school this summer I also decided I would like to go there in something close to good shape. So I finally have the motivation to stop tossing twix bars down my pie hole. I'm also back at the gym with a slightly different program. I'm more focused on cardio now.. I hate cardio but it is a fast way remove weight and increase stamina. I'm still doing weights just not as much 30 - 45 minutes of cardio and 15 minutes of weights (3 excercises of 3 sets of 10 whatevers).
Food wise I've cut down on sugar and carbs. I eat a ton of fruits and veggies with some critter flesh thrown in for the cave man.

Typical day - 2 eggs w/ 2% chz for breakfast. 1 cup of carrots, asparagus around 10:00
lunch is something like salami (Oscar mayer hard salami is tasty) or deli shaved ham along with more veggies. An apple or something for desert
3:00 more veggies. a small serving of Jujifruits (maybe an oz, compared to the whole box in the past).
some time in the evening - dinner - chicken breast or whatever critter was too slow to get away from me along with ...you guessed - more veggies

I'm even starting to throw in the occasional fish.

Even better is my wife has decided to get on her own program. she is doing LA weight loss (been successful in the past) and some bootcamp program. The boot camp is totally foriegn to her. She gets up at 4:30am to make the 5:15 class and doesn't get home until close to 7:00am. I'm really proud of her, this is not something I would have thought she would do. I can already tell a difference in her - more confidence in barely a week.

anyway, just my way of not doing the work I'm supposed to be doing right now

Think of it this way....That's 5 less to lose to the goal.

Good Job. Keep working and it'll all come off.

And he didn't GAIN five pounds! A loss of five pounds in one month isn't bad at all. They do say that if you lose it more slowly you're more likely to keep it off.

Scale readings?? What's that? I get weighed when I go to the doctor, every 2-4 months. Feb '07=168 lbs., Dec. '06=169, Sep '06=172, June '06=175, Apr '06=174, Jan '06=179. I threw my scales out years ago- haven't owned any in at least ten years.

When I pulled my head out of my butt in Nov '04 and realized I needed to do this, I went from ~200 to 185 in 2 months, but then it took a year to get to <180. Everyone said I had reached "my plateau" and that I shouldn't be working so hard at it b/c I wasn't gonna lose any more, blahblahblah. It's been slow, hard progress, but I'm another 10 lbs. lighter now so I proved all the boneheads wrong! Now my goal is <165 lbs.- big difference from the original goal almost 2.5 yrs ago of 185!!

I did it, and so can you. And I'm not done yet. Ignore the boneheads, show your doctor, coworkers, and the rest of the naysayers that they are idiots. I've got lots of coworkers who seem genuinely delighted in my success, but won't hesitate to offer up a sloppy cheeseburger or a big honeybun. I just tell them no thanks, "I'm watching my girlish figure". When I offer half an apple or banana, they say no thanks, "I think I'll have a candy bar". I work with boneheads and idiots.

Good for you, Russ! Even though you might have hit a plateau and not have been losing as quickly for a while there, you were doing your body and your health right by sticking to your program. I'm sure you body thanks you!

My dad is a heart patient. He's never had a weight problem (maybe, at the most, he had an extra 10 pounds on him, but it wasn't for very long) and his cholesterol is very low, but he uses his weight to judge how well he's staying on his program. He weighs himself once a week, and if he's gained even half a pound, he knows to start watching what he's eating more carefully. He stays on a fairly strict diet (for his heart), but if he gets a little lax, it shows up on the scales. He doesn't want his bypasses to clog up, so he's being extra diligent.

I think I got into trouble because I didn't weigh myself for ages. It's so easy for weight to creep up on you, a pound here and a pound there. I think that, after I get into shape, I'll still weigh once weekly to make sure that doesn't happen to me again.

Keep it up.

We'll beat these mad beasts: Nicotene and Fat, all in one swoop.

Hooray for us.

its not always weight you lose, sometimes you lose inches and sometimes you lose pounds and sometimes you lose both.

don't give up

That's true. I'm seeing more of a difference than is showing up on the scales. I feel better, too. I won't give up. I'm in this for the long haul--for my health. Losing weight is just an added bonus.

Excellent!! A little backslide &/or indulgence isn't too bad, but it's got to be only a little.....it's still really hard not to get carried away sometimes.

Shaping Up: There's A Lot You Can Do in 30 Days
from
Bally Total Fitness

thought this was really good and wanted to share

Yes, you CAN make noticeable, satisfying improvements in your physique in as little as a month. But it's important to understand what kinds of changes are possible (and which goals may not be realistic within that time frame). Here are 4 guidelines for achieving results in 4 weeks:
(1) Lose weight gradually — no more than 1 or 2 pounds a week. It may not seem like much at first, but you could be 8 pounds lighter after a month. (2) Lift weights! Regular strength training plays a huge role in weight loss. It builds lean muscle mass, which increases metabolism (i.e., you burn more calories). Bottom line: If you want to see results quickly, make sure you're doing both cardiovascular and strength training. (3) Give up the "spot reducing" myth. You cannot lose body fat primarily from your stomach, thighs or other trouble spot. Our bodies lose fat proportionately. (4) Know a "body fat" problem from a "muscle tone" problem. If you want highly defined muscles, you won't be able to see them as long as there's a layer of fat hiding them. If you're carrying excess pounds, you need to lose weight while toning your muscles through strength training.
