What worked for me, b/c I had never been in "a gym" before and didn't have a clue what I was looking at or for: I talked to a few physical and occupational therapy folks at a local hospital. They generally do short term work with people then refer them to someplace else. Their recommendation led me to "my gym". The trainer is a licensed therapist who understands my limitations vs. my needs vs. my capabilities, and is able to taylor my program very differently than someone after knee surgery or neck surgery. Other trainers at other gyms insisted that I didn't know the difference between good pain and bad pain, even tho I've been dealing with it for 15+ years.

Cary, I know how much you've suffered with your pain. And I can imagine how difficult even the thought of exercise must be when you're in a lot of pain. I congratulate you on sticking with it. You're sure to feel much better in other ways that will hopefully offset the pain.

I have a tiny inkling of how you must feel because my knees hurt pretty much no matter what I do (walking has been the best exercise for me). And it's a visious circle: I know my knees will feel a bit better if I get the extra weight off, but the exercise is takes to get the weight off hurts my knees.

I've been wanting to take up swimming because I think it would be a great form of exercise for my knees. I never learned how to swim as a child, and I've developed a fear of water over the years, so I would need to find a teacher who could work with me one on one and be able to help me with the fear. But before I can go out in public in a bathing suit, I need to lose some more weight. I know; it's stupid, but that's how I feel. So, hopefully, in a couple of months, I'll be able to start swimming. I have a good friend who's really addicted to swimming. She started swimming daily when she was going through a very difficult time in her life, emotionally, and it was what saved her, she says. She was swimming laps in a pool for a long time (when she lived in Hong Kong). She's now moved back to her native Australia (Melbourne), and she's doing competitive ocean swimming. At 56, she's a few years older than me. She's my idol!!

Hey Julie! You should check out the YMCA! Really, no joke- ours here has a program they call "Aqua-cise". It's just like resistance training, but it's done in the pool so body weight is supported too. My wife fills in as an instructor now and then and says folks with knee and hip pain love it.

Believe it or not, we don't have a YMCA here. But we do have a really nice Senior Center (don't laugh--younger folks can use it, too, although I think I qualify as a "senior"). I'm sure that they offer similar classes; I'll check that out! They have a nice pool, and that's where I was planning to take swim classes. I've always wanted to learn to swim properly, so I'm kind of excited about it.

Default 2 yr 3 mo worth of loss.

I posted back at #24 the way I'v been able to incorporate small changes into my life. This is what it's done for me over the last 2y3m's- about 5" of belt that's not used anymore.
Even tho the belt really needs to be replaced, I keep it to remind myself how far I come and, more importantly, how much more work I have to do.

That is SO great!!!!! Good for you!!!!!! <clap, clap, clap>

Thank you for the suggestion of talking to physical therapists at a hospital. I am really nervous about getting started in there. I am already worried about that FIRST day, when you feel uncomfortable, and then to walk in and have no idea where to start.....

julie, you might want to look for a ywca or one of those health clubs that tailor to women only. that might help you with the getting out there syndrome...not picking, just saying...you know...being supportive.

Good for you Julie! I love swimming!!! Heck, I just LOVE the water!!!!!
In the summer I notice my weight drop when we hang out on the boat alot. Between the water skiing, tubing and swimming, it really helps!!!! However, this year I want to be smaller BEFORE I go out on the boat in a swim suit!

I secretly have another incentive for getting my body in shape....MeanGirl and ImpactG keep pressuring me to get my first biker tattoo!!!! I also would like to get a few body piercings. I'm not going through the expensive and pain to get these done until I have the body to show them off!!!!

Not yet....just telling myself that as soon as I get slim enough, I'll have them done...(I also have a "higher" place I want pierced....a matching set!)

Okay, we have hijacked this thread already, so what the heck!!!
