Believe me, I've thought about that. We don't have a YWCA or a WMCA here, and the health clubs for women only don't have pools. But maybe the senior center will be better for me.

Thanks Saki.Girl! Now see, to me the tongue sounds WAY TOO painful!!!!

Yes, back on topic....I have a wide variety of reasons to diet. I am hoping with some support from here I will accomplish my goals!

It really is nice to have a group of friends to offer support. And summer is still far enough away that we have time to accomplish our goals. I'm making better progress than I have in a long time, but I still find myself getting impatient. But I can't expect to change overnight what took several years to happen.

That's a good reminder for me Julie!
I get impatient too. That's why I am joining a gym!!!! I am thinking that hard exercise along with the diet will take it off faster. Wrong attitude, isn't it?

Hard exercise will take off part of it. However, as was explained to me by my trainer. The harder you exercise, the more you rip up your muscles, and then...they build and repair themselves, making you stronger. The byproduct of all ripping, tearing, shredding, and rebuilding....nothing more than muscle, which weighs more than fat. Hmmm...interesting problem, huh?

Good to know! So if I work out several days a week and the scale goes up, I shouldn't get depressed, right?
I could live with muscle instead of flab REAL easy!!!!!

Exercise *does* help! I'm trying to step mine up just for that reason. But I also know that I can't lose the weight in one month that it took me three years to gain. No one can exercise THAT much! Bwahahaha

The scales are SO deceptive, especially for women. I notice that when I get up in the morning, when you're supposed to weigh yourself, my fingers are so swollen that my rings won't come off. By later in the day, my rings are so loose they're flopping around on my finger. I know my weight fluctuates greatly. The scales are notoriously undependable, I think, unless you only weigh yourself once a month. And who can do that? I can't! I can't even make myself weigh only once a week.

I think it's better to go by inches and how your clothes fit. The jeans I've been wearing are getting pretty loose (I'm almost down one size now), and I can visibly see a difference in some parts of my body. And that's a lot more encouraging than getting on the scale and not seeing my weight go down.

But all that extra muscle ups your metabolism all the time, where cardio doesn't do that. Cardio is great for upping your endurance, but lifting weights is better in the long run for losing weight, IMO.

Yeah, they're both really important. And as you get older, especially, the cardio is good for your heart, and the strength training is good for your bones! This old gal has to think about those things.

Maybe if I can get a good pic, I will post a picture of my calves. I wish the rest of me looked like they do! I like the muscle part just to scare the men! And the look on their faces when a woman can easily pick up a hundred pounds!

I hear you, Tina. I used to work in a glass shop, and I routinely picked up and carried incredibly heavy pieces of glass. The first time one of the glaziers had to lay down a giant piece of 1/4" plate glass on the table with me, he was terrified. They learned to trust me, though, and I was proud of how strong I was. I felt like I had to prove myself, too, because I was the first woman glazier in town, and some of the guys really resented me. They were afraid they'd have to "help" me all the time and that I wouldn't carry me own weight (no pun intended). I knew I'd won them over when I was carrying a really heavy insulated unit one day, and one of the guys came over to me and told me to ask for help with something like that. He said even the men wouldn't carry anything that heavy by themselves.

My legs used to be really strong when I rode my bicycle everywhere, but I'm a slacker now. If I have any muscles left in there, they're covered by fat and are invisible.
