Backsliding on my commitment is hard not to do, especially on the weekends when we all want to relax, maybe sleep in and lounge aound, etc. It's so easy for me to let my guard down and forget for a little while how important it is to me when I'm not in the daily routine of activity and diligence. Sure I'm a bit hard on myself, but i don't beat myself up over it, and neither should you. You pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start again. I usually look in the mirror, scold me, then let it go: what's done is done, time to move on. If you've ever heard the "I'm so disappointed in you" speech from a parent, try sounding like them when you talk to your reflection. For me it works. I tend to work a bit harder that week at it and focus a bit better at my goals the following weekend.

I have a question..... When one goes on this diet thingy, loosing weight is easy for the first month or two and you hit a time that you seem like you level out and the scale doesn't change for awhile. This can be a little discouraging for some first time dieters, Can anyone explain why this happens?

increase-your-metabolism-weight-plateaus

I was writing out an explanation, as I understand it. Turns out, I'm not far off, but WebMD can explain it 2 minutes, better than I can take paragraphs for it.

Watch, enjoy, and learn.

Man, I have to stop weighing myself every day. I keep telling myself I won't, and then I walk past those scales and they call out to me. My weight fluctuates so much it's insane. It can be discouraging, even though I know it's not my real weight that's doing it; it's water retention. So I really need to stick to my guns and only weigh once a week.

I noticed this morning when I went for a walk that my coat's looser (I hardly ever zip it up so I didn't notice before)! It was getting a little ... ahem ... tight around the hips there, and now it isn't. One small step at a time...

Did you join online or are you going to go to local meetings? One of my friends just lost 80 pounds at Weight Watchers, and she's been overweight since she was a little girl. I'm really proud of her, and the program really worked for her.

Good luck, Ang!

Well that wasn't the answer I wanted to hear but it sounds like the truth to me. Thanks DarkWolf! I guess I need to work a little harder at it.......I have been slacking a little on the working out part.

Yeah, a good friend once told me, don't check the scale every day, just once a week. You'll feel better.

I hardly ever even think about food, which is a huge change from the other diets I've been on.

This is the most strict form of the diet; I'll relax it later and add back in some foods, but I hope to stay away from meat and dairy as much as I possibly can. This program, developed by a Dr. McDougall, is a lot like Dean Ornish's program, which is vegetarian (not necessarily vegan). Both are very good for heart patients. They have studies to show that this type of diet can even reverse heart disease that already exists.

I've seen both of my parents go through bypass surgery, and the disease killed three of my grandparents. I've had a several cousins drop dead of massive heart attacks in their 30s and 40s. So, even though this sounds pretty drastic, I feel like it's what I need to be doing. It's not for everyone, though--that's for sure!
Hi
There are some proteins and vitamins missing in an all veg diet. Long term vegetarians find ways around this. Are you taking supplements?
Sounds like you enjoy what you are doing. I'll wander through this thread to see what else is going on.

Here are a couple of other ways to "look" at it. Look at a 15 pound turkey and realize that's what 15 pounds was, another I heard was buy a 5 lb can of crisco, every time you loose 5 pounds hold it up and think about it, yea! that much less blubber. 15 pounds is a good accomplishment.

Anybody go to Curves? I have been going there and I really feel better. Exercise is supposed to increase metabolism in an overall sense.

What I didn't mention in my previous post (I was trying to be positive) is a recent visit to the Dr's office. I found out a few things that made my eyebrows go up. The Dr told me I am pre-diabetic and I have high blood pressure and she explained that a good diet and regular excercise could help with this. My goal is actually to get that under control first so we began to excercise before we started the Nutri System program. Once we were able to see how the food tasted and how convienient it is we opted to keep going with it.

While it's really important to tailor what we all eat it's equally important to construct some sort of excercise program that can help with some health issues. That can be easier said then done...especially if you suffer with any kind of physical impairment due to injury or other health problems.

Keeping up with the regular excercise has been more of a challenge for me as I deal with injuries that cause my body to suffer at times that requires me to take pain medications. When things are at that stage the last thing I want to do is excercise. I've found that when I am feeling better and am not experiencing the pain associated with the old injuries/surgeries then the excercising moderately really does help with the overall feelings of well being.

Keep up the good work...all of you...and do your best...and eventually you'll see changes begin to occur. It's taking the first step that can be the hardest and then to be consistant can be equally challenging...but it is possible with the proper thinking and attitude.

Good health to all!
2WF, Cary Ouch!

You are handling the whole thing proactively and you have a positive outlook. That in itself is tremendous boon to your better health. I have some male friends who tried Nutri System and have been very happy with it. You can control diabetes with diet but it's for long distance runners, sprinters need not apply!

Re your injuries have you thought about getting a spa? You know with the jets etc. It really helps some people and besides it's fun. Cold night, hop in the water.....ahhhhhh.

I have a recurring back problem due to a car accident a few years ago and keeping limber is the only thing that helps (sometimes), also some knee problems etc etc. I go to Curves, go on walks on non Cuves days and do daily stretches but somedays it's really hard to move. You are an inspiration, if you can work your way through your greater issues then doggonit so can I!
