My mom has a PHD in nutritional science. As of the start of 2008 I was 6'4 and 310 LBS. Waaaay overweight.

By the way, I just weighed in at 268 LBS, loss of over 40 LBS in a 18 month period. Would like to get down to 240 or so.

Woo hoo for elliptical trainers! Running still beats the crap out of my knees and ankles, but after 20 minutes of solid running on the elliptical I was sweaty, out of breath and had no joint issues.

Did a total of 25 minutes and am starting to work out my muscles, lots of reps and little weight. Don't really want to build up bulk, just tone.

I was 179 and in 2 months I lost 20 pounds. Now I'm no expert but pretty much I feel it was due to portion control. I loke to eat and eat a lot so when I cut back I lost weight. Not easy but effective.

I have lost 70 lbs over the last 2 years with changing my food and walking. Now I am stepping it up and going to the gym!! Always said I would never be one of those, and now I am!!! I would never have been able to hold a bike up two years ago let alone steer!! I refuse to call it a diet!! It is a LIFE STYLE CHANGE!! I now quit smoking cigarettes 5 months ago ( 2 packs a day for 29 years). I did not gain one single pound! When you are in the zone you are in the zone!!! I still have a bit to go, but now, for me, 44 is the new 20!!! This is the best I have ever felt mentally and physically. The more you overcome the more you WANT to overcome!!!! Good luck and keep it up!!!!

I am down another 10 pounds...weight loss has slowed down considerably, but thats the plan. I have started to add healthy carbs sowly so I can find out how many I can eat and still lose weight so that eventually I can find how many I can eat and MAINTAIN weight. For breakfast I had poached eggs and ham and a peach. For lunch I had grilled zucchini and sea bass with some yogurt and blueberries. The Atkins diet is really great if you read the book and understand what you are doing, the only crappy thing is that it costs $$.....my gf and I spend about 80-120 bucks every 4-6 days on food because there is no cheap fillers like bread or pasta to fill up your plate.

Bad word!!! I do not do diet...lifestyle change. If you do diet, as soon as you stop you gain!! I have kept my weight off for over a year and am continuing to lose. I quit smoking 6 months ago and did not gain a pound!!(phew) You are smart to lose slowly, better chance of keeping it off. 2 lbs a week is a good goal, it probably took time to gain, it takes more time to lose. Keep up the good work!!!

Yeah, I suppose the word diet implies that it is temporary...but this is a lifestyle change. It's just when I say "lifestyle change" people think I am coming out of the closet! We certainly have to have different behaviour around our friends...they are all the skinny ones that can eat anything and not be fat. The worst part is when these people eat candy and chips and crap all day long, and then tell me that my diet is unhealthy and that we should "eat a balanced healthy diet" . This makes me cringe and I want to kill them! lol But yeah, like you said, the key to longevity is to make it a permanent lifestyle commitment.
