Alright, I'm not as mad now as I was about 2 hours ago. But let me start this off with a poll. Basically how many people use their helmet locks on their bikes?
Ok, so for the past 2 months or so, I've been using my helmet lock on my bike instead of taking my helmet into work with me. I figured it was no problem and that being in a parking lot that has a roving security guard that LOVES to give out parking tickets, that it's be alright to leave it there. Not to mention the parking lot is for a government building. Low and behold, I was mistaken. Coming out of work today about 45 minuets late, the first thing I notice from about 100 yards from my bike is that my helmet is missing! At first I'm like "Did I take it upstairs at lunch?..." so I start to turn around and head back inside, but then I remembered that I didn't. So my blood starts to boil and I walk over to my bike to see the side where my hemlet was attached is scratched up! I take of the rear seat and there is the helmet stap clasp still attached but no helmet to be found. The security guard is over on the other side of the parking lot dozing off in his little gulfcart as people are leaving. Up north from him is about 100+ cops from all the police departments in the County of San Bernardino. But to end the story befor I go on forever, I filed a policy report, I filed a incident report with the security company (I'm probably going to follow that up and see what I can possible do about the guard not doing his job), and tomorrow I'm going to see if this is covered by my insurance. On a positive not, got a better helmet! Cost me $300, but oh well...life's life. So just vote in the poll and give me what your thoughts are on helmet locks and if they're really worth using...

I use mine when I'm not going to be that long in a store or something, but if I'm going to be all day at work or what not I take it in with me..

Rarely. I'll carry it with me, hang it over the throttle, toss it in the saddlebag... whatever is most convenient.
When I carry it with me, I use it as a shopping basket.

I use my helmet lock all the time on the Nomad. Now that it's north of 100-degrees, I carry it with me. It's no fun putting a hot helmet on. I figure it's unlikely anyone would sever the strap to get my helmet, as that would render it useless.
I just bought a new helmet today (5/11), too. The weirdest part for me was riding TO the place where I bought it without one. Except for today, I never ride helmetless, so it was a very odd feeling. |

I use it on occasion. If im going to be an hr or two ill leave it on the bike instead of lugging it around. or if I can see the bike from where I will be... other than that i keep it with me. At work i always bring it inside with me... I dont trust anyone know a days....

I said no, because the majority of the time I just hang my 1/2 helmet on my bars.
On the rare occasion that I wear my FF helmet, i always either bring it with me, or use the helmet lock.

I voted "yes" only because I have a couple of times. However, if I can't take the helmet inside, I'm usually with someone who has luggage I can stash it in.
The only two times I've used it were: 1) A trip to the Jersey shore to visit Barnegat Lighthouse. I didn't want to lug it all the way up the stairs and risk it getting dinged up while squeezing past people in the processes. 2) When we stopped off to do some hiking around some waterfalls. Same deal as above, but with rocks instead of stairs. I wouldn't leave it on there for any length of time, though. Whenever possible, I carry it with me. |

I have a small cable lock that I put through my sissy bar. And I have an alarm. Nothing is fool proof, just trying to draw attention to anyone who tries to mess with my bike.

Like Saki.girl my lock will leave the helmet laying on the exhaust. And I'll be damned if I leave my helmet out in the open after spending almost $400 on it. Why take the risk? I figure that if I take my helmet with me, no one can mess with it.

Never use the helmet lock. I take it to my lab with me. First, I park in a public street parking and second I live in a college town with about 47,000 students! I wouldn't be surprised to find a little rattler in my helmet when I come back in the evening if I left it with the bike...the kind of jokes kids play

Sorry about the helmet. I never thought someone would cut the strap to steal a helmet on account of the fact that the helmet wouldn't be much good without a strap. I guess some people are just mean enough to do it anyway.
I got the Kuryakan grip ends with helmet locks. When my girlfriend and I take the bike into town, it's nice to not have to carry the helmets with us all over the place. Western North Carolina is a little different from other places I've lived in terms of crime. Most people here don't even lock their car doors. Well, at least you had a good excuse to buy a new helmet. Cheers! Steve

To everyone else, thanks for your response and honesty. I figured more people used them but I guess I was incorrect in that assumtion. But I've learned my lesson!
