A good friend of mine has three Roomba machines (two vacuums and one floor washer) and swears by them. I used to give him a hard time about them; I thought they were silly.
Well, he got me one for my birthday. And wow! It's amazing. I love it! Right now, while I'm sitting in here typing, it's vacuuming my hallway, living room, dining room and kitchen. Yesterday it did the bedrooms. It does a really good job (an amazing job, really), and it's fun to watch. It does't fall down the stairs! I'm going to have to get the floor-washing model. This is like having The Jetson's Rosy the Robot living in the house.

It is fascinating watching those things go around the room.
One of my sister-in-laws got one when one of my nephews was only three. He broke it because he kicked the crap out of it out of fear for his life (it followed him for like four feet and the nephew swore that it was going to eat him). Good thing Costco takes everything back. Well, when they exchanged it for a new one, the 13 y/o niece said, "You killed the first one so we have to get another one. This one is it's uncle...his name is Uncle Jesse....don't kill Uncle Jesse, okay?". "Okay," the nephew said and 2 years later he asks if he can "...turn Uncle Jesse on to clean the room".

I'm notoriously uninterested in doing housework. I looked into a Roomba about a year and a half ago and shelved the idea. So, do they really do work as advertised? What happens if it catches on something like a wire, does it shut itself off or burn the house down?

How far can it go from it's base Julie? Can it also just go from room to room or do you have to have one for each room?
We've seen those around here, but always wondered if they really are worth trying... Now we know. ![]()

One of those would choke on all the animal hair in my house and give up the ghost in the first month of service.
Either that or the kids would step on it while they stampede through the house.

I have a pretty large great room/kitchen area, and it does the whole thing. Goes under all the furniture and around the table and chair legs. It's pretty cool!

It works really well. I do pull up the wires that might get in the way, but so far it hasn't gotten caught up on anything. It does a good job of cleaning, and it seems to cover the entire area.
