Default Are Your Streets As Bad As Ours

MyFox Milwaukee | Potholes Reason For Showdown At City Hall

I was taking the lil one to school this morning, and for the past few weeks i have been real mad just by looking at the condition of our roads here in Milwaukee. Thinking all i want to do is ride my scoot but in fact that it might be just a little scary. I might have to pay attention to the potholes more then anything. In the 2 miles or so of a drive to the kids school there are so many potholes it is just stupid. This morning i tried counting while driving on the way back home how many potholes i see and have to avoid just to drive these streets. Well i only got to 20 or so in the first block and said screw it why count too many to count. There are some strips that are so bad you look like a drunk driver just avoiding them. I hope our city takes care of these cause i dont feel like going down on the bike due to potholes.....

Fortunately our potholes are still full of ice and snow, but a month from now the streets won't be so great. Same thing every year.

The main road along the ocean here in corpus was "patched" instead of repaved...you need a kidney belt in a Mercedes or BMW to survive.

Ridn a V2K or Hd any any other low cruiser and you will be feeling as though Chuck Norris punched you in both Kidneys...

Winter weather and salt takes a mighty toll on asphalt. It happens every year. unless ofcourse you invent some other cheaper, better quality material.

There are better materials that don't get potholes, but they are NOT cheaper. Isn't our government wonderful? Contracts awarded to the lowest bidder!

think about that the next time you drive over a bridge

And you are right, there are better materials. however most people dont know that the DOT is funded entirely by the gas tax. If the materials were switched to something less cost efficient, then state taxes would hike up to fund transportation.

I think the blow trucks do a lot of damage as well. At work we had new speed bumps put in last Oct. Well.... they aren't there any longer.

The road are bad here as well. You have to keep you eyes open all the time. They don't do anything around here unless they are big enough for the cagers to start complaining.

Luckily where I am at in ohio they take almost too good of care of the roads so they are pretty smooth almost everywhere I am at.

It's a mix around here. Some of the roads are great, and some are absolutely horrible. Most of them though, are nice until you get to a bridge. The bridges are in bad shape. There's a bridge on I-40 here that runs through downtown Oklahoma City. It must be the worst road in town. I won't even go down it on my bike. It about makes you pee blood after driving down it in a car. There have been a couple of times in the past year where large chunks of the bridge have broken away and left a giant hole in the highway. Nothing there but air. I can't believe nobody has been killed. A few years ago, a drunk, passed out barge driver hit a bridge pillar underneath I-40 out in eastern Oklahoma. A big piece of bridge fell away and a whole bunch of people fell to their death in the Arkansas river. 14 people died I think.

I had a really good friend go down hard because of a pot hole. Watch out for those devils, they are bad news.

I would say 98% of our roads here are in really good condition.

As a fellow Wisconsinite who lives in North Racine (actually Caledonia) just maybe 25 minutes outside of Milwaukee, I have to say that the condition of the roads from Milwaukee all the way down to Kenosha are ridiculous this year. I have never, ever seen them this bad. I know that it happens with expansion and contraction from temps...but man we have had a winter every year...so what gives with this one? I don't know what is worse, driving on these roads or thinking about the amount of time and inconvenience it is going to take to fix them once spring hits! I think I will try riding due west to get away from it...

I believe when I drove over a pothole here there was a compact car in it.

While it's true our gas and fuel taxes are SUPPOSED to go for road building and maintenance, in fact less than 75% actually does. If it was all spent as it should be, there would be no excuse (other than corruption or incompetence) for roads to be in bad shape.

Well, except that fuel taxes are based on gallons, not price. When fuel prices go up, the amount collected for taxes actually goes down, since people buy less.
