Red face I need some help with a database

Anybody here able to help me out with a database project? well...... when i say help, i mean construct the database A guy was helping me, but he has disappeared and didn't sort it for me. I need a database where i can add competitors, and add each to a specified class....... and so on. I'm told, it can be done easily enough, it's just that i want it to then sort the winners out in specific events based on the category the competitors are entered into
Confused?? i know i am!!

What program did the other guy start the db in? Or maybe a better question, is there a specific program you need it designed in? What db programs have you already had experience using (if any)?

What you are asking for isn't overly difficult. What do you feel your level of comptency is on the computer? Since you will be the one using the db (or if others will) then this is something to consider as well in the design (whether automating the queries for you, data entry via forms, etc).

i think he was using Access to do it. The database is for people that are fairly computer illiterate..... he was going to design a point and click style with drop down menus and have everything needed on one screen. I have very limited experience with Access........ once i could have done most of what i need, but i have forgotten more than i ever learned about it.

Were you able to get a copy of the file that he started for you or will the db need to be designed from scratch?

What is it you need - a database or a database with a front end? Someone could probably model you a database and give you an importable .xsd in very little time at all. That would give you an empty database. From that you could use SQL inserts to add the data you want.

It's a little more difficult if you want an app built on top of the db. Do you have detailed specs on what you wan the app to do?

He hasn't sent me anything as yet. So basically it needs to be done from scratch.

Mate i need something with a front end i guess you would call it.... the db will be used by people with very basic computer skills..... what i was looking for is a point and click set up with a series of drop down menus to select classes.
Let me give you a run down of what happens at the events.
They have 5 events, a hill climb, a twin track, a mud drags, a creek run, and a mud run. These are divided into classes; 4 cylinder, 6 cylinder diesel, 6 cylinder turbo diesel and V8 and womens. Also in some events there is a locked and unlocked class. The db i was looking at was where there was a "Add Competitor" function, you then enter their name, then select their class and it generates a competitor number for them, say starting at 1 and going from there. Another function to add results , select the event, put a number only, and their time, the db would then store the results against that competitor. At any time, there will need to be a "Results" drop down so that you can select an event, and the db will spit out say the top 3 results for any given event...... at this point in time, it's all done manually with a pen and paper and often there is problems with the results. I am trying to get this done for them as a donation. I am willing to pay if somebody can come up with something that works..... i'm told that it can be done. I'll pay $150 US if somebody wants to put a few hours into it for me.

In all honesty, I'm a bit tempted but I'm not sure I can committ the time. Right off the bat I have questions:

1) Would one person be entering all the info or would multiple people be using multiple computers to enter the info?
2) If multiple people/computers, would you need to merge all the data from all the computers?
3) Can you just start with new data for each event or do you need to keep the data for historical purposes? (If historical, then you will need to record the location/track of event)
4) Do women compete in just one event by themselves, or can do they compete in any of the events in any of the classes? (I'm only asking to get an idea of the tables/structure required)
5) Does a rider make multiple passes in the same event/class? (Basically asking if you are tracking just a single time or best of X time)
6) What is the purpose of the locked/unlocked class?

I love it when a database project starts in the middle!
Nice shots of the Dragon Run, actually a nice webshow, too!
Access would probably be a good tool for him, but the input masks and reports and table links and Switchboard would take a bit of time.
But, hey! he's a Kawa brother...
So, what's his time frame?
(I get sucked into this SO easily... can't keep up with what I already set up, but I have priorities,,, It will be light in Redding in 7 hours and the smoke is gone. Gotta go ride!

at this point i have a guy that is helping out... thanks a HEAP Steve!!

to answer your questions, One person, or maybe two would be entering all the info.

It would be good to keep the data for future reference.

Women compete in each event, they compete amongst the guys and other classes...... they rarely compete against their own class.... their time is entered and sorted that way.

2 events they do 2 runs...... the mud drags, and the twin track.... the event is for 4WD vehicles

Locked and unlocked basically means with or without diff locks.
