Sure the Corolla is more $$, but a basic one is around 16k or something and has four doors. Sorry I don't get the smart car thing. I will keep buying my dumb cars.
And they require premium gas, so its way more expensive than a car that needs just regular to.
and you have zero trunk / cargo carrying space.
Lets see the tent, sleeping bags, foamies, camp stove, axe etc go in there, and the 2 kayaks tied to the roof for a weekend camping trip.
Heck all that will fit in a Honda fit just fine, along with 2 people, and the kayaks on the roof.....while the honda fit gets better mileage, and runs on regular gas to boot.

Heck, I can carry more on my bike than I can in a smart car. I also get better gas mileage and enjoy the trip a lot more - and she'll run on regular.

Not really... it's only an 8.7 gallon tank, so the difference between regular and premium is only $1.60/tank.

Ya but over the life of the car, its a lot more to burn prem, than reg for sure.

Buy a bike, most run on regular, and get WAY better mileage than a stupidcar.

Still wouldn't say "a lot".... and as fuel prices climb, it becomes more economical to use premium.

When gas was $0.32/gallon, premium was $0.42. That's a 30% increase, so say over a year, if you used $400 worth of fuel, premium would have run you $520. (1200 miles, 10mpg)

Now that it's close to $4, the difference between $3.89 and $4.09 is only about 5%, so over the course of a year, if you buy $2,300 worth of fuel, premium would only be about $2,400. (1200 miles, 20mpg)

That's a pet peeve of mine with all these so-called "fuel efficient" cars: the get crappy gas mileage.

My 1981 Jetta got 45MPG on the open highway and around 35 in town. My parents can get over 40MPG in their 2001 Saturn 4-banger on the highway. Now, automakers advertise 30MPG (highway) like it's something special. My 1999 V8 4400lb F150 gets 19MPG on the highway if I keep it at 65-70 MPH. You're telling me today's little cars can't beat my highway mileage by more than 11MPG or so?

Even bikes should be higher than they are - even with the greater horsepower you get in some cases.

My four cylinder 83 CB550 can get 63MPG on rural highways at aroiund 60MPH - and my bike still could use a bit more tuning. I don't think a modern 500cc bike can reach that despite only gaining maybe 5HP or so. I'm running 45HP and I think most 500's today are around 50HP. Add in better engine technology and tuning (even if we're still talking carbs), lighter materials and today's 500s should be matching, if not beating what my aged machine can do.

Give me a break...Please...

Granted, those modded Smart Cars are pretty cool looking.
ive been saying this for a while...its retarded how many of the manufacturers say "30 MPG!" like its something amazing! my old 87 Honda Accord did 35 MPG on the highway, at 160K miles! my 99 Nissan Altima gets 28-35 depending on hwy/city usage. i even got 38 MPG once, all highway to Nashville and back. one tank of gas, i didnt even get below 1/4 of a tank!

thats why i dont buy into the whole "small, fuel efficient" car scam. plenty of cars have been plenty fuel efficient for years, without sacrificing storage space or comfort. Hondas been doing it since the 80s, as have Toyota and Nissan.

but man after watching that Smart car with the Busa engine...sweet! i want the Ferrari body with a ZX10 engine! or maybe ZX-14!

Screw all the smart-cars etc. My next cage ride is gonna be a 2010 Chevy Camaro SS.
The 8 cylinder engine will get 22 mpg or so.
Which is better than my dodge 1500 which gets about 15.
Not really into the smallish car scene. Owned one and got rid of it. It rode terrible. And if someone farted beside you, it'd blow the car off the road.

Lucky...

Speaking of smart cars, While I was taking some hydralucs and phenumatic training I saw a video of acar that runs on compressed air. I think it was made in France, I will try to find the video and post it.

I agree with you.
The stupid car gets ****ty mileage, and is so boring i do not know how anyone could stay awake behind the wheel.
If you want mileage buy a scooter...otherwise get whells that rock....maybe a supercharged saleen for example.

I had a few small cars.

They got decent gas mileage, but nothing remarkable, and none of them (save a Prius I had and got rid of) even came close to the 63 mpg of the KLR 250 I had....or the 50 mpg my Versys gets (when it's not parked for repairs )...or the 45 mpg of the Boulevard I'm looking at getting.

On the other hand, I spoke to a guy with an '86 Jetta Diesel, he said his car was returning about 65 mpg (probably at 55 mph) on the highway.

And for the smart to only get about 43 mpg on the highway, that's crap. A car that size should be getting about 83 mpg, not 43. Whoever designed that death trap needs to be strung up by their toenails.
