I just read in my local paper about a rider who crashed his bike and died after a tire blowout (it didn't specify front or rear). Have any of you ever experienced this? How common is it? What causes a tire to blow?

Sorry, couldn't resist. But seriously, road debris, improper inflation (I think that can cause one). Not sure about how often they happen. |

It usually takes at least 3 drinks for my tire!
LMAO!!!! YOu get a big gold star for that one!!! Seriously, I've had flats twice now in the past year or so. Not a blow-out though. Mine were both due to nails. the tire went down fairly slow each time to the point the I recognized the ill handling quickly and had time to get off the road before they were completely gone. Both happened at about 45 mph. at higher speed, I can imagine the back would have gotten very squirelly!

A lot of times what is reported in the papers as a "blowout" is actually tread separation.
Underinflation, running the tire bald, overheating (burnouts), shock from coming down from a wheelie/stoppie... Any of these things can cause damage to the carcass and lead to tread separation.

So far, never. I've come outside in the morning and found a flat tire on my car or truck from a screw or nail that cause slow deflation, but never had a blow out. I have yet to even have a flat on any bike.

I had a tire blowout on the left rear of my truck at 70mph years ago thanks to a half a beer bottle in the road. Swerved to miss it with the front tires but caught the back. Instant squirreliness (sp?) and I can't imagine the same thing happening on a bike. Scary.

Never, nor anyone I've known on bike for the last 22 years.
Now, a nail in the tire? Plenty of times.

I've had the valve stem brake and let all the air out rather quickly. Tina was on the back, didn't loose control. was taking more power to maintain 70mph then it started feeling a little mushy. hit the side of the road and found the flat.

1969 on the freeway in Virginia riding two up on a Honda 350 going 65 mph the rear tire blew out. Almost got run over by a semi as he was about to move into the passing lane to go around us. Got the bike off the highway and rode it into some tall cattails unhurt. Needless to say we were both shaking and glad to be alive. When the tire blew the bike began to sway side to to side wildly. It's a feeling I've never forgotten!

It sure does. I was doing about 55-60 when mine caught a nail. It gets mushy and squirrelly all at once. I can't imagine dealing with a flat on the front. It's my only real fear about riding. The back tire running flat, you can control it easily enough and long enough to get off to the side. A flat on the front just sounds scary and I hope I don't ever experience it.

HAd it happen 2 me twice, both times running about 70mph when the back tire blew, once it was a tube the other time was tubeless. Just ride it out and hold on, it is a little scary but not like it would have been if the flat would have been on the front.

About 20 years ago the wife & I were out for a Sunday ride on our old Gwing. Just passes a big rig on a 6 lane when the rear tire let go big time! I was in the centre lane & luckily the trucker changed into the outside lane to avoid running over us if we went down. Managed to keep the bike upright by just pulling in the clutch & coasting to a stop. I was really pi$$ed off until I realized what could have happened!

i had the rear tire on my 1500 go out on the freeway. it didn't 'blow out', but deflated quickly. the back end got mushy and wobbled, but i had time to pull over and wait for a very expensive tow.
back in the '70s my friend gilbert lost the front tire on his norton comander on a busy freeway. he put both feet down to stabilize the bike until he could get the bike stopped. the soles and heels on both boots were gone by the time he was safely on the side of the road.
