Default Reminder that you can't prepare for every situation

A guy in my riding group sent me this message. Talk about a freak accident. He is known not to show up so we didn't think anything of his absence.

"sorry I couldn't make it on Sunday because I had a motorcycle accident on my way to the meet up. I broke my wrist, 3 fingers, and 2 are sliced in half. Say sorry to everybody I couldn't make it. A guy in a pick up had a mattress in the back and he didn't tie it up so it flew and hit me."

No matter how much you watch the road around you, something can always happen.

hope everything goes well for him

I was behind a truck with an aluminum ladder in the back of it. next thing I know it's out of the truck spinning clockwise in the RH side of the lane. I missed it barely.

Yeah...I've seen crap like that before. Crysti and I ride side-by-side when we're out and were in traffic when a huge sheet of plywood came flying off the back of an 18-wheeler! Two emergency stops in a shared lane...executed perfectly. And then we promptly continued home to empty our underwear!

No disrepect intended, but I make it a habit of not following any vehicle with attachments, such as ladders, or anything that can slide back an injure me.

I hope your friend has a speedy recovery, and I hope all here make a mental note not to follow such a vehicle. Pass it, or pull over and let the car behind you pass you.

If however you are in a situation where you have no choice but to follow a vehicle with attachments, slow down and leave a lot of room in front of you.

Yeah...that's our usual approach except the piece was on top of the trailer! Had no idea it was there until it was airborne! Eek!

The road is full of surprises. I had a women in a BMW pass me in my lane today, almost forcing me into a head on with on coming traffic, on the way to work this morning. When I pulled up next to her and ask what she thought she was doing, she replied she didn't see me.

I yelled you must be f*****g blind, so she pulled away angry. Can you imagine driving a car like a 5 series BMW with all that power, and being blind? Her car was pretty banged up also. Wonder why.

I really hope that the injured rider can be helped to overcome what sounds like devastating hand injuries. It is funny how we are concerned about the well being of people we don't know but that share our common passion for riding. People in cars don't show that level of empathy. We do; because there is a bond between people who ride.

A buddy of mine in Kentucky was killed a couple of weeks ago on his bike when a horse ran out in front of him. Hit it broadside. Never had time to react.

Marty, I cringe every time I see that.

That's ok though. Bad cagers are everywhere. I had one pull out in front of me this morning, actually. Th only reason I saw it was because my head was on a swivel.

Donnie, it sure happens fast EH ?

I swear cagers have secret meetings that bikers are banned from, trying to figure out the fastest way to kill us all, and get us off THEIR roads.

Yes, I know I am over reacting a little with that statement, but sure feels that way somedays.

And is it just here, or everywhere that a certain trend of the worst offenders trying to run us down, drive certain vehicles.

Locally for me I pay EXTRA attention to clunkity old chevy pickups, and all minivans, as they seem the worst drivers of all.
