I moved into a new place last week and the first thing I did was leave the sliding door open to get some air. Later that night I noticed a cat in the yard and a few days later I started seeing fleas on my legs. THIS SUCKS! Stupid little jumpyy *******s! I WANT THEM ALL TO DIE A HORRIBLE PAINFUL DEATH!!!!
I've complained to the property manager but havn't gotten a response yet. In the meantime what would you guys recommend doing? I've been vacuuming twice a day and dumping the container out every time, from what i've found on the internet putting a flea collar in the container will help with killing any stragglers. I've also set up bowls of soapy water around the room to trap adults, tomorrow I'm buying foggers and spray. Anyone have any other advice to keep them at bay until the pros get here? Oh and kitty is getting trapped with a free ride to the shelter.

Diazinon is great. I wish I could get some.
We had a flea infestation. Setting off bombs didn't help much. I sprayed flea spray and Triazicide, which knocked down the population. Just so you know, brake cleaner and carb cleaner kill fleas too. We noticed fewer right after I went through the basement on a rampage. The damn things were even in my car. We had two different exterminators out, and still had fleas, though less. Finally, I spread Seven dust around and left it out for a week, vacuumed and spread some more Seven dust. Agitation from walking around or vacuuming makes the eggs hatch. The Seven dust was the only thing that did the trick.

Don't forget to re-bomb the place about 2 weeks later, to catch all the young'ns that hatch afterwards before they're old enough to breed.
Even the foggers/bombs that say they kill the eggs don't get em all.

Go to walmart and pick up some diatomaceous soil. It's tiny seashell powder that is safe for humans and pets. Fleas get near it, it rips their bodies and lungs to shreds. Talk about painful deaths! Just sprinkle that around and let the massacre begin!

Today I bought a bottle of flea poison that you hook to your hose and a can of the raid flea killer. I gave the yard a good soaking especially around the sliding doors so hopefully that will keep more from coming in. After I bombarded the yard I started the chemical warfare inside. I cleared out the room and used the whole bottle on the carpets, no fleas on my legs so far. I'm going to repeat this in ten days or so, but right now it's looking pretty good.

I used to have the same problem when I lived in San Jose. Fleas are endimic to the area. (little blood suckers)! I'd bomb the whole apartment about once every six months. When we moved to Fresno it got a little better. LA was almost as bad as San Jose. In Fresno and LA I'd do the lawn a couple of times a year and the house quarterly.
If it wasn't feas, it was them dang little ants.

They aren't coming in- they were already there in the rugs, and when you moved in, you were fresh food for them. The people who moved out probably had a pet that had them. They don't all hang out on the host, the will feed and then drop off, which is why they get in the rugs and stuff.
You need to break the cycle - there will be lots of eggs in the carpets that are going to hatch. So it might take a few bombings to get rid of them all. I'd complain to the landlord, I can almost guarantee they were in there before you moved in. Funny how some areas are worse than others. I have 4 dogs and a cat and haven't seen a flea in years, but we also use a preventative that also protects against mosquitos, which can carry heartworm.

You can bomb the house, and it will kill all live fleas. Vacuum first, set them bombs off, vacuum after you get back and get rid of the trash.
There is ONE problem here though, the bombs will not kill eggs. You need something stronger then they are any one that works on a time release over a long period of time. According to a few pest control companies, fleas are can't live in the sun light, so they (at least in AZ) generally don't "come in" they are already in (as stated above). You have to kill the source which is in the house, in the carpet.

Even the stuff that says it's effective on the eggs only gets 40-60% of them.
You need to follow up the treatment in a couple of weeks to get the survivors.

+1... the eggs are TOUGH and they can survive for months. There really isn't much that will kill the eggs. Best case would be something that would attach to the shell and remain active long enough to kill the emerging flea.

hi all. Flea eggs are almost impervious to insecticides, and can survive for months without hatching. but when movement or body heat is detected they can emerge from their egg in an instant as little blood sucking fools. what you need to do is find something called an IGR ( integrated growth regulator). Gentrol IGR is excellent for fleas although im not 100% sure you can buy it over the counter. what it does is basically sterilizes the adults and i believe it sterilizes the eggs too. its been a couple years since i got out of the biz. Next time you are looking at store bought insecticides, DON'T look at brand names.... look at the chemical active ingredient percentage on the label. you would be surprised at how many manufacturers sell the exact same item for different prices. as for a residual treatment for the fleas, i would reccomend a liquid chemical called cyfluthrin- brand name is Tempo.

Well seems I at least beat em for now, several days and no bites. The pros get here in a few days and should be nuking the *******s with IGR so this doesn't happen again. In the meantime at least I can sit and watch hockey in peace.
