Default Here's what I did with all our CDs

A few weeks ago there was a discussion about ripping CDs and what to do with the CDs after all the music is on your computer. Some people said they wanted to keep their CDs and other thought it was best to just pitch them. Because we're getting ready to move and trying to reduce our belongings by about 50%, I wanted to get rid of the CDs when I was done ripping them. But the hubby wanted to keep them. They filled eight book boxes, and that was just too much space. So this is what I decided to do.

First, I ripped all of the CDs to my husband's computer. (He had never done this; instead, he was taking CDs into work and listening to them on a portable CD player, despite the fact that his [former] company gave everyone video iPods last year.] Then I sorted them on the pool table according to type of music (four major categories) and then by artist within each category. I ended up with four groups: jazz (Alan has a LOT of jazz), rock, country (the smallest group), and one group that was a mix of things like classical, opera, reggae, cajun, blues, bluegrass, international, etc. This is what the sorted CDs looked like this morning when I started the final step (excuse the mess in our basement; we have boxes everywhere):

Then I started putting the CDs in the four 240-CD wallets I bought online (I ran out of room and had to use a fifth wallet I had some other CDs in). This involved taking the CD out of the jewel case, taking the cover out of the jewel case (and cutting the top page off the booklet if the cover wasn't a single sheet of paper), then putting the CD into the wallet with the cut-out cover sheet on top. I did this extra step to make it easy to see what the CD is because a lot of times the printing on the CD itself is hard to read. The end result looks like this:

As I worked, the stacks slowly disappeared...

And then I was finally done!

It took eight hours today to put all the CDs in the wallets, and I ended up with eight big plastic trash bags full of empty jewel cases. But I'm really glad I decided to do this.

My back is killing me. Now I need a good stiff drink!

my neighbor did almost the same thing, except he has a couple of very large capacity cd players hooked to his home theater. he keeps the booklets in the wallets and each booklet is numbered to the corresponding cd in the home theater. he just enters the cd number on his remote and its good to go.....i was a little jealous, that i didn't think of something like that.

I couldn't do that to my beloved cd's, especially since i have more than a handful that are worth over $40 with some going into triple digits.

well now....without knowing it you have opened a can of worms my find friend.

there is and has been a long going discussion on my audio forum whether or not those who listen to their music on CD are true audiophiles. I weigh in on the matter in such that if you listen to the SACD recordings and play vinyl as well then yes, you are an audiophile but if you just listen to run of the mill CD's highly compressed mass produced lacking any depth or clarity, you cannot be an audiophile, no matter how expensive your system is. garbage in garbage out my good man.

Well... maybe a close 2nd to Black Sabbath... but when it comes to EuroMetal... I'd have to pick them (barely) over the Scorpions since Priest has never done the orchestra and "album of ballads" thing

Not a bad idea. That's something I was contemplating, but not 100% sure just yet!

you could probably sell all those empty jewel cases on ebay as a bulk order...
people are always looking for new ones and they crack so easilly.

shipping would be pricey i'd have thought... but box them all up, stick it on the bathroom scales to get a rough weight and then you'll know how much to charge for shipping...
Then you could just put them up on ebay for $10-20 to get them off your hands and make enough for a romantic meal out (at Taco Bell)

That's pretty smart. Its actually easier to find what you are looking for in those binders too. We use them at work to keep our software CD's in. Very handy.

Julie - I'm going to ask this because I have OC moments from time to time. Did you leave spaces between groupings and artists so you have a place to put new ones without having to redo the whole wallet?

Maiden fans are a loyal, misguided bunch. Maiden is a good band, don't get me wrong.

The Priest are the true Gods of heavy metal, with more talent in Robs voice than Steve harris and his whole crew combined.
