I am changing my bars. I was having a problem getting the right control housing to fit together(throtte side) After piddling and frustrating for some time, I learned that there is a nipple inside the front housing that fits in a hole in the stock bars that was preventing the housing to snap back, because the new bars are "HD" there was no hole for the nipple thus preventing a fit. I got out my dremel tool and grinded the nipple off = good fit. I am almost finished with my front work, will post pic soon.

That looks just perfect! I keep on thinking that my bike can't be same as yours when it's done. But every time you do something that i want. I was thinking of ordering either 10 or 12" narrow apes this week. Next thing i know you got them. I guess I'll work on the rear this week. I'll make a point and go with the springs because you didn't Thank you for all the help.
P.S. Did you need to extend anything for the bars? Did you see same bars but a tad narrower (stock width but 10" tall is what i have in mind)?

Thanks Ram, I didn't have to replace any cables. I had expected the clutch to be too short but it was fine after I losen it up some. I have stock 2" risers. I searched ebay for weeks for bars, I found these used and cheap, Phat performance has a big selection of bars but they are pricey.
good luck with your project, post some pic's.

I got this far. but it ain't enough. I am taking off for change. I am now cleaning up my bars. I took off the left box with it goes the signals, horn, dimmer, and the wire that tells your bike the clutch has been pulled in, so if stalled in gear can start up. I have wired a toggle switch to the dimmer wires, I might mount to the headlight. the red/blk wire to one side of the toggle. then both the blue/yellow stripe wire + red/yellow stripe to the other side of the toggle. switch is on position High beam / off position low. Thanks Billy Mac and Alley Rat for your inspiration.I'll post pic when mounted

From looking at this project grow and having done several myself my suggestion to you is lower the front of the bike about 2" and get a kick stand froma vulcan 900 (there shorter). Also since you are planning on trimming the wire down and getting that deep into the project go for the smaller tank mod! I like the progress and I hear you, it feels like everytime you step back "what if I__" comes to mind. I think my bike is done but nope it never is. Keep going with it!

Thanks Steve, transforming, its getting to be as much fun as riding,
lowering the front will give the bike a more level stance?
it is lowered 3" rear , 1" front now. angled stance. I still have the spacers from the skoot werks kit. lowering the front is easy and will require a shorter stand. The sporty tank looks like it belongs. require a new speedo set up. Your current bike looks great and is a model for me and others. Keep up the work.

Ya, the stance will level out and give it that lowered custom look. "stuffed". Ya with the tank you just have to slim the wiring harness down which you plan on doing anyways and get a new speedo. Although with the tank mod I cut my miles per tank in half. So if this is your only bike it may get annoying.

I use to have a 95 sporty hugger had a 2.2 peanut kept me lookin for a station every 90 miles then I put on a 3.3gal. I like having the bigger tank and speedo, but it does look fat.

I can completely relate to the "what if I ____?" sentiment. It seems like every time I'm by my bike I take a step back and dream for a few minutes about what I want to do with it. I'm planning on messing around with the front of the bike this winter-- clean up the forks, different turn signals, probably new bars. I've got some projects at work and around the house that have to get taken care of first, though. Stupid responsibilities.

Right on. I'm thinking I'll probably revisit that this winter on my bike. I just want to clean it up some. When I originally did it, I left a lot of wires long and just wadded them up and wrapped tape around them. Now that I know everything still works like it's supposed to, I'll probably get everything cut to length and get a tighter wiring harness.

Did you rattle can all the blacked out parts on your bike? How many coats? Did you clear coat afterwards? How is the paint holding up over time? Inquiring minds want to know.

yes, I sanded then primed, then 2-3 light coats flat black, dry over night, 2 light coats
it is holding, the only place it chips is where I tighten down a bolt. I touch it up after tightened. I never used any clear, the speedo, air box, tank, struts and fender was done in march with krylon camoflouge ultra flat, the mirror, headlight, forks & trees done recently with Majic impliment and Tractor paint. gas has put a couple spots on the Krylon tank.
