Awesome posting and awesome looking bike you have there COnstrictor. I was wondering, do you or does anyone know if a mod like this could be done on the VN900? I was thinking that something like using the Kury Hi Five kit would look sweet on a Classic.

I seem to remember that it can't be done on the 900 and the V2K..

Only because of the backplate design.

It's not that it can't be done, but it would require some fabrication... defeating the purpose of the original mod: To provide the performance of a $300 intake for under $100 (a little more with K&N filters).
Added bonus, it retains the symmetrical appearance of the 1500/1600 design.
They LOOK like they could be stock.

Rich, I understand that it may not be the most realistic thing to do financially, I was just more wondering if it would be possible.
I love the mod with the fact that it opens up the air flow and gets rid of the intentional factory restrictions.
I am just not sure I like the look on a classic. On a Custom it looks great, but this is where personal styling and taste comes in I guess.

Nice job Constrictor... I just bought a 1600 classic and have the Cobra Speedster Longboys and the PC 3 installed... All I need is the Caddmann Kit and a dyno. I'll post results after it's all done.

Hey Constrictor thanks a bunch for making the caddmann mod so easy to understand I was gonna go with the tornado air mod till I read your post, Very good job and thanks again for all the great detail. I bought two 9" Mr Gasket kits today with filters I eventually want to go to the Red K&N filters or somthing similar. I was able to use my stock 8mm bolts to hold the covers on (is this normal) I bought other ones just in case, Iam gonna put the stock filter inside of the one on the left side( do I need to make a block off plate if I do this) I painted the chrome lids black to go with my 07 Meanie SE blacked out theme I have a PC111 and DG Hard Krome 3" big straights that are sent away to get ceramic coated black I found a map that is for Vance and Hines big shots stagerd with the thunder airbox would this map be close enough for my set up Thanks for any and all info

Howdy Taker74... In reply to your post.. Try that map. It may work. I have Cobra Speedster Longboys on my 1600 Classic with the dual Caddman set-up like Constrictor has and I got a map right off the Power Commander.com website. I used a map that was for Vance and Hines exhaust with baffles and a Thunder Air Kit. It works PERFECT. I increased my m.p.g by approx 2 to 3 m.p.g. and the power is unbelievable. I was gonna haul my bike to a Dyno shop and pay 200 buck for a custom map but this one works just fine. Now... if you keep your stock filter on the left side, you do not need to build a block-off plate. Here is the link also to Gadgets original page

The blockoff plate is so easy to make I don't know why you wouldn't do it if you already bought two filters. I think the bike would look silly with the left side still stock. Just my opinion. The dimensions of the blockoff are not critical you can cut one from an old cookie sheet or pie pan with a scissors & just punch the screw holes through it with an ice pick. The sealant is what makes it work.

I used duct tape on the outside (back side of the housing and then put the sheetmetal block off plate on the inside of the housing. It seems to be holding up very well. Sure beats the heck out of spending the money on a Thunder or Barons... plus I like the look. I will be ordering my after market cloth filters from Spectre today. At 16.99 a pop, thats way less than a pair of K&N's.Thanks CaddmanQ for a great set-up.

You're quite welcome.

I put my blockoff on the outside of the back-up plate (or housing) because that's where the molded gasket is.

BTW, I did some test runs before I made that blockoff plate initially, and I just blocked the hole off with duct tape for the test runs.

It only adds about $50 to the cost to get a spare backplate.
Block that one off and you aren't drilling to mod your stocker if you ever want to restore it to stock.

Huh? Who's drilling the backing plate? I sure didn't. I just used the stock screws right through the stock holes, into the new metal blockoff plate.

BTW, so many guys who've done the Thunder & Hypercharger mods have spare backing plates lying about. I'll bet just about anyone could get one cheap/free if they posted on VROC or Delphi (maybe even here!)

The snorkel on the 1600 is a rubber boot that fits like a grommet and is sealed with glue.

I'm doing both sides with the Caddmann mod I have 2 Mr Gasket filters with covers I was gonna put the stock filter inside my new 9 inch filter on the left side so I dont have to use the block off plate .Once my bike is no longer under warranty I will make a block off plate and seal it to the backing plate. But for now I have to be able to do a 1/2 hour swap and I'm back to stock if I have to take it in for service with no evidence of a change I just ordered KN filters # E-3527 they should be in thursday , a little pricey at $48.99 each but still cheaper then other air intake mods, Iam gonna look and see if I can get the foam covers for the filters as well to help me out if I get caught in some rain

Rain is not a problem using the K&N filters. Carwash detergent is.

Many people have ridden in rain harder than anyone would care to ride in and there are no ill effects. If you are concerned about "soaking" while it's parked, you can throw a shower cap over the air cleaner, but while on the road, it's fine.

As far as putting the stock filter in the 9", I'd recommend leaving the left side stock for now. 90% of the air needed is coming from the right side, and the height of the K&N filters is not the same as the stock filter. If the stock filter does not seal properly against the lid, then it'll pass dirt straight through the top.

Ah ha!

Three guys I know with 1600's did this mod & never told me this.

Was it a mid-model change or something?
Or have all 1600's always been that way?

Dunno... mine's an '06 and the service manual for the '03 shows the same, so I assume it's all 1600... or at least Classic and Nomad, the Meanie could have the old backplates, given that it retains the 1500 "domed" dogbowls.

It's kinda nice, because it's all flat, and the filter seats better than the 1500 without weatherstripping tape.

I got my K&N's today they seem to fit better but I wasnt totally sure if they were 100% sealed so just to be sure I put weather stripping on the backside of the filter where it meets the backing plate , this should give it a good seal, Iam in the process of making a block off plate for the left side
