Constrictor's Caddman Air Mod Tutorial (56k Warning)

I will be installing the Caddmann on my 04 1500 Classic carbed. I know Caddmann is familiar with the Coyote kit also. My question would be is there any reason the 8.5 K&N filters with the Morroso covers (mentioned in the Coyote Mod) would not work on both sides for the Caddmann? I like the idea of the filter fitting on the inside of the back plate but I want the balanced look and dont want to mess with cutting out that D&%! tube. Is there anything else I need to be aware of when doing this on a carb model?

Might work on the 1500.
1600 has a solid plate across the bottom of the right side backplate that I think will interfere. The ICS will absolutely have to be removed... and even then, it's a SWAG that it'll fit AND seal properly.

Really... it's only 1/4" "sticking out", and it's black... blends in with the engine.

Someone recently asked me if I ever installed a PCIII or some other type of proper tuner, and I thought it was worth updating this thread, but I am still running on the original 680 ohm resister from 2.5 years ago (wow, has it really been that long!!!) when I originally did this.

The bike still runs as good as new. I have not once ever had a single problem. My plugs do not show any signs of being fouled. About the only annoying thing is having the ICS's disabled, I gotta pull out the throttle "choke" cable when the bike is cold otherwise it stalls...but that has nothing to do with the resistors.

Anyway, its good to see people still find benefit in this mod! I still get compliments to this day from people who like the look of the two 9" filters!

Hey guys.

Today I was at the parts store where I bought my first set of Spectre filters, nearly 5 years ago. I was shocked to see that not only had they no longer included the fancy chrome wing nuts, but the price had doubled as well. If you include the cost of both the filter kit and an El Toro wingnut, that's nearly $80 with tax for two kits, or about 142% increase .

Either inflation is worse than I though, or the popularity of this mod has driven the prices up.

When I originally did this mod, it was going to be a temporary deal. I wanted something I could quickly put back to stock if I needed serious warranty repairs. Well THAT never happened <grin>.

Also, I thought the chrome covers looked simple & cheap, but I was experimenting, and so felt no reason to go overboard on the expenses. I had always intended to replace this setup, or at least the covers, with something more elaborate and attractive.

Maybe I'm just cheap, or maybe I'm just lazy, but for some reason I've never done it.

Yeah, I still check the board from time to time and offer my .02 when I can. My life has dramatically changed (for the good) in the last 2-3 years, so I don't have as much internet time as I used to, but I still like to get online and check out what's new! I still have my bike and its pretty much in the same shape as when I regularly posted! The most important thing is I am still on 2 wheels and enjoying it!

I haven't checked the prices around here, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't go up. Even at $80, that is still a far cry from some of the aftermarket kits and the Caddman mod flows as good as any of them and (in my opinion) has that unique, custom look that no other kit has!

Hello guys and girls,
I'm Alessandro from Pescara ( Italy), also registered in KVRF since early 2007 when I owned a VN800b 2005y.m., now owner from January of a new VN1600 classic
( I preferred not to change my forum name in honour of the fine bike the 800 still is ).
I ordered Spectre filters in USA ( 2white and 2 blue) and made the Air mod. only in the right side for the moment, without disabling solenoids, and I have made since about 1000 miles without a problem ( only had to set idle rpm a bit higher than before, but always in the 950 +/- 50 range ) . For the moment it is time to ride , during winter I will complete the left side and install the Spectre triangular bolts on both plates ( question of cosmetics, not performance ).
Engine runs cooler and better, response on the throttle is more fluid without gaps sometime before felt, more power ( not dramatically more, everyway ), I had not to install the resistor on the air temp. sensor, bike doesn't show signs of running lean or backfiring or surging . I also blocked the intake of the reed valves and this stopped the popping on deceleration which was more audible after the mod. to the air intake ( I run completely stock pipes ).
Solenoids are annoying when cold, but after 10 min. ride they stop functioning and start again only occasionally . Great bike , thanks again to the old and new contributors on the forum.

Hi,
Thought I would pitch in on this age old question. I'm getting ready to do the Caddman on my 1500 Classic. I read a few weeks ago about a guy putting small pneumatic mufflers on the inlet side of the ICS solenoids. I did this and it seems quieter although I don't have the open intake yet. I really don't want to get rid of them because I ride in a lot of 40 degree weather in the early Spring and early Fall. I'm installing a TFI this weekend and intake sometime after that. Have a good rest of the Summer.

The tubes that they plug into on the backing plate are throttle plate bypass ports. When the ICS opens, it's the same as cracking the throttle.

More effective/reliable than a bi-metal strip thermostat on a high-idle pin? Perhaps. Smoother and quieter? Heck no.
