you took all that apart just to put grease in the bearing?? I guess if it was me I'd have put a new bearing in there even if the old one didn't look bad.

Okie dokie. Just think it sounds like a lot of work not to replace a 14 dollar part. I'm not gonna worry though, cause if yours looks good at 18k miles, I've got a long ways to go before it would need service.
btw - nice job on the pics and instructions. Real easy to follow and understand

I'm glad to see you were'nt to concerned with whether or not you could handle the job at hand (and it went without a problem) It's always nice to see some of the members try and succeed at doing mechanical work on there ride( it may not be the same as riding but it comes close)plus you saved enough to buy the wife some cruiser's for her ride! The one that can benefit from this is your son because atleast he'll know the type's of things to look for in the future when he has problems with his own auto or bike. They don't teach much about mechanic's in school anymore(and thats too bad) I can remember back in high school with the old muscle cars changing clutches and motors out along with rebuilding motors and even doing valve jobs to the heads( even learning to regrind the valves to seat better) it was some of the best times I had in school. You won't become a pro from doing it ,but atleast you'll know how a motor or transmission works and why it does what it does.

woody, my brother and i were helpers to my dad when he rebuilt all his cars prior to my folks split. the last was a '53 chevy pickup truck, I remember regrinding the valves to make em seat better and also haveing to hone off the lip edge from the cylinder bores too.
I agree about teaching my son, we had a good time, and i'm reconsidering working on ol red again and getting it as a father son project.
