Don't know if I can help with the color change but I might be able to add a couple of aboriginis.

Why not select the area, desaturate the area and then use the eye dropper to select the color and airbrush it into that area, with say 75 or 80% opacity?

OR... select the area and adjust the color through 'hue/saturation'... you get less of a posterized look to the color.

Oh... if you use this method, you may want to select 'colorize' first on that same control palette.
