Got me an old '83 KZ750H4, and it seems to make a little "tick tick tick" noise and I suspect cam chain. The adjuster looks a little different from the Honda and Yamaha ones I am used to. The bike had 14K on it when the speedo cable broke and it hasn't been licensed since '86, so other than that the motor is really tight. The tick is subtle too, not loud.

Could be the chain. Does it have a spring type adjuster (spring looking device on the outside of the tensioner)? If so, I used to give them a good twist and that worked. Also might not hurt to check the valve clearance. Can cause a ticking sound also.
Good luck!
