Back to the rack!
After shaping the metal and plastic I like to use a bare metal primer to seal the steel and protect it from rust. When the bare metal dries I scuff it with some 180 grit paper and shoot the rack with primer surfacer (lacquer primer). ![]() When the laquer primer dries, dry sand it with 400 grit. If you find any imperfections you can either use plastic or spot putty to fill. I usually wash the part with plain water, then use a good wax & grease remover on the part, then use a tack rag just before application of the base color. ![]() After the base color has dried I like to use 800 or 1000 grit paper and lightly sand the base color without going through. Wash the part again and mask the part off for the second color. ![]()

Shoot the second color then carefully remove the masking material and let it dry.
![]() Lightly sand with 800 or 1000 grit paper again, mask for any other colors to be used, wipe with wax & grease remover again and shoot the colors. With this rack I masked the stripes. Again, be real careful when you pull the tape and I pull the tape 30 to 45 minutes after application. Keeps the tape from pulling the paint up. ![]() When the last color shot is dry I will touch up any edges, if need be, wipe again with the wax & grease remover, tack the part off and then shoot the clear coat. ![]()

Allow the part to dry fully and use it. If you get some dust or lint in the clear you can always color sand the part. Lightly scuff with 1500 grit to sand out the lint, then use 2000 grit (lightly), and then finally I use 2500 grit paper making sure there are no sand scratches before using a fine cut rubbing compound to polish.
From here we will see how the rack looks on the bike if the owner will post a picture later.

Glad you got out of the house. Hope you aren't in too much pain.
Rack looks awesome, as usual. You sure have a knack for fabricating.

Thanks, Kevin. It was fun to build this one. The others were a lot of work to build in the small shop, constantly tripping over equipment or shuffling around stuff. Life is better now.

Ken, that rack is looking mighty good. I'm glad to see you're up and about again. Are you back to 100% again?

ROTFLOL....
I need to keep you away from Shirley! I'll pick your brain about colors another time. I did buy some extra tins/tank to paint up to give the bike a different look when the mood strikes. I tend to go with darker colors...usually metallics...so it'd be interesting to hear your thoughts on colors. Purple....Sheeeeessshhhh!!!!!!! |

I don't know about 100%, but I'm getting around pretty good. I have learned not to get carried away with doing things by myself when help should be asked for.
