No remapping or commander add-on needed if you're only de-baffling or replacing your pipes is the consensus. However, once you do your pipes AND replace your air intake, then you will need remapping.

Backfiring is there, but not much of it and not all the time. What is there, I like the sound of - and again, it's not a lot.

But if you want to minimize the popping sound, you can do the marble trick - I didn't do it, so I can't tell you much about it, but it sounds and looks easy to do. All you need is a regular kid's marble, a few simple tools like pliers and screwdriver perhaps, and a little bit of time. You basically shove the marble into a hose, put hose back in place and you're done. You can do a search for the marbling on these forums and you'll find some great instructions with pictures.

but, like Albert said, the backfire popping is actually kind of cool in my humble opinion. I used to have an old ford when I was a teen that did that when I put glasspacks on it and I loved it.

I did the de-baffle a few days ago, I left the waffle cone looking baffles in at the front of the pipes. At the front I noticed about a half inch ring left has anyone cut this out? It's pretty deep in there so I just left it but was wondering if can be cut out fairly easy?

It will NOT cancel the warranty.

It only cancels the warranty on the baffles!

Quick question about doing the de-baffle for a VN900 Classic LT ... if my plan is to yank the baffles completely, is there any value in doing the "Step 1" part and drilling out the screen?

If I don't do that, will there still be something hiding in the back there after the inner pipes come out?

Thanks,
Sam

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the cutting the screen(s) will give you a chance at slightly more "throaty" sound instead of the much louder rumble of complete de-baffling. If you are going to remove the baffles, the screen(s) are inside the baffles and you will remove the screens when you remove the baffles.

If you KNOW you want to go all out then there is no reason to cut the screens out of the baffles.

Default Awesome Walk-Thru

Great posting! I did it this weekend and I am amazed at the difference in the sound. Thanks for the detailed instructions. If anyone else knows of any low-cost customizations like this for the VN900 Custom please direct me to them.

Thanks again!

for cheap, you might search the forum for "webslinger speedo". we pretty much all learned to do it together so there's a bit of confusion here and there, but very complete.

Webslinger... he'll do your custom picture or help you design it for just $25!

We have a forum thread on it about 30 pages long, though many of the photos are gone now... http://www.kawasakimotorcycle.org/fo...ebslinger.html

Vulcan Dude or any other California riders, If you are still on this thread, I understand you debaffled your pipes. First you are happy too with the results? Secondly, no issues with the cops? I've know folks who have been pulled over for loud pipes. I'm about ready to do it.
Thanks....

Yes, very happy with the results, deep low rumble at idle and nice growl when you give it juice - for little $ if any, and little time involved, can't beat it. No problems with the police - have even been in front of one at a stoplight. Just stay conservative around them when accelerating, and I don't think you'll have a problem... there are plenty of bikes with much louder pipes.

That being said, riding around town, I noticed I do make car alarms go off , but like I said... there are plenty of other bikes with way louder pipes.

Dtinz,

I have not had any issues either. I've been all around southern California since I did it, and have had severall drive-bys of CHPs with no response. But there's always the chance of getting one on a bad day...

I'll see what happens once the weather warms up and I take a trip to Big Bear. They seem to like pulling us over.

so my friend and I tackled the project this weekend on my 09' 900 SE. It took us about 2 hours because we tried to do it our own way. Instead of being patient and continuing to just wiggle the baffle back and forth until it snapped, we started using all type of tools, manuevers etc. We ruined drill bits, broke 2 painters poles, drank about 8 beers and had a **** load of metal splinters!

Anyway, the thing is LOUD. haha. It's a really throaty rumble, hard to explain. I barely have any backfire (even when downshifting). I chipped the paint a little bit around the edge of the exhaust but I have to hit it with flat black anyway. All in all, easy to do, just FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON PAGE 1.
