Yeah, I was talking about the rivets in the end cover. Seems a lot simpler to drill them out rather than taking the hole saw to it. I'll start with that then mmmmiiight drill the baffle ring...I can see it happening, but don't know if I'll need to hear it.
Next up: Fi2000, then a Scootworks front pulley! Thanks for the advice...this is great! |

I used a acetylene torch to cut the end plate out, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you are an experienced welder. I put wet towels on the outside of the pipe to keep the outside of the pipe from turning blue. I left a little bit of the end plate in there but I don't care.

yeah just read predfan's info carefully. The delphi instructions go to unnecessary trouble cutting the flange in there when all you need to do is bend it out of the way.

Cool...that's good to know. It seemed to me there had to be another way to get around that, and now I know. I wasn't too excited by the prospect of sticking a reciprocating saw in there.
One question regarding pilot holes: it means drilling a smaller hole to guide the drill when you drill the larger hole in the baffle cap, right? Remember, I've the skills of a small soap dish where mechanics are concerned. But even a soap dish can learn, eh? I think I'll tackle this over the weekend. I'll let you know how it goes. |

OK, I got it all done. I went as far as drilling 8 holes in the baffle cap as a start, and it was relatively painless procedure, except for cutting the pipe with the reciprocating saw. That went OK, though I dinged the pipe ever so slightly. I'll need to watch it over the winter. Drilling the cap was easy, and so far it sounds great! Might want to completely debaffle later on, but for now it's all good. It only took about an hour or so. Tomorrow I'll scuff and paint the inside of the pipes to improve the look and make the cap look a little more tidy as well. Now it sounds all nice and throaty, the way I imagined it should. Seems a little more perky too, but that might be psychological. Either way, I'll take it!
Thanks for the great advice! |

I just did the complete debaffle this weekend and I LOOOOVE the new deep throaty sound. I was saving for the V&H but I like the debaffled sound so much that I think that money will be better spent on some new bling!!! Thanks for all the write ups on doing the debaffle, you guys saved me a lot of money.

I have the eight holes drilled out on both pipes but need to go further. If I did the debaffle, I imagine I'd have to do both pipes for equal back pressure. I'm dreading doing the final step and going, "oh sh#* that's way too loud."

careful, you'll have predfan scoffing at you too!
You can rebaffle a slight amount... http://www.kawasakimotorcycle.org/fo...900-pipes.html

hehe your speaker cartoon reminds me of the time I foolishly bought Blue Oyster Cult tickets for the front row.
Seriously though, I'd like to get side by side with someone who's fully unbaffled to see if mine actually is any quieter... probably all in my head.

I started drilling on my first pipe with the 3" hole saw around 6:00 pm. This process is long considering that I have to let the drill cool down after every 10 min. of use. This is a 18-24 beer job. Hope it's worth it.

Done deal. I only rode around for an hour but so far so good. It's difficult to judge how much louder they are since the sound is directed behind the rider. When I started it up out in the open for the first time I thought there was hardly any difference at all. The first overpass I went under....- they are louder for sure.
Off topic but if anyone needs stock baffles from a 900 classic I'll give you a good deal. |

Have you checked with Smartpartz.com - Hard Kore Baffles to see if they have the quiet baffles for the Roadburners?
